Hows it going you 'orrible lot? So got me first '5 on tuesday after much research and late nights with retina burn from the screen. You's lot have proved a great asset into what to look out for. The little beast is a 1.6 1993 for the uk market done a pleasant 135k and still in bleedin' good nick with minimal rust (one small blister and a tiny bit of surface on the a pillar behind the door). Leccy windows, recent hood, projector fogs, apparently LSD and a few other tastey bits, from what I can tell reasonably specced for a uk model, All for the princely sum of 1300 of my hard earned british pounds.

Thar she blows.

Also snuck one in of the missus as I know what you's lot are like.
So....on to the next bits
Well from what i've seen so far alignment and 14 deg BTDC should be first on my list, as it is i'm a total newbie and I cant really find much info on either. I'm not to fond of getting ripped off and it seems that a full alignment is different some how to a normal one, so what do I need to get done? And this timing advancement thing, does anyone have any info on this? My mechanic is doing my cam belt soon and a feel this would be an opportune time for him to swing it round a bit for me.

Tony's looks good but bucks is quite a way for me. I do have a place localy called maldon supertyres and they have exactly the same hunter hawkeye equipment. Should I expect similar results? They have always been really good to me. As for this timing adjustment what exactly does it do, my basic mechanical knowledge tells me it will ignite earlier(?)

another edit, just phoned supertyres and it turns out mx-5oc are all popping down there end of this month to take advantage of 50% off but the guy on the phone recomends I get it sitting on coilies first so will probably only go down for the social and save my hard earned penies up for the full shbang.

Thanks! The more I look at it the more shmexy I find it! Would that be the lodge at Battlesbridge? I used to go to the odd fiat meeting there.
I'll most likely not be going to wim as much as I'd love to I'm not really sure I'm willing to travel all that way when there's a place conveniently round the corner. Which leads me on... Has anyone had any experience with maldon supertyres. I did have an alignment done on my old punto and they did a fine job and got a full read out which made me full of smiles and I had a flashy piece of paper to impress my mates with.

Like I said, give WiM a call, get his "Fast Road" setting and ask them about Maldon Supertyres. Tony will give you his honest opinion of the place. He has even in the past given garages a call to talk them through the settings required so he can be sure they will do a good job. He doesn't just run WiM as a business, he is a true enthusiast and is only interested in making sure everyone gets the service they need wherever they go

oddly supertyres came up recently on general gassing i think it was a few days back.
my personal experiences, and i've had quite a few, are that they're great for fitting tyres delivered from camskill etc. - have had issues in the past with other fitters
they do have a hunter 4 wheel alignment machine also, and an absolute shed load of photos round the waiting room of exotica on the hunter that they've aligned
however, perhaps for insurance purposes or whatever, they wouldn't deviate from factory specified settings, and when i asked the operator what we could do to alter the geometry, he just looked at me like a martian
not saying i wouldn't throw business their way for tyres etc. but they're a very different company to WIM, who'll cater for you as an individual customer. i live colchester way so WIM is a 200 odd mile round trip, beats paying a ton for someone to tell you your car's ready and that they've taken the steering wheel off to make sure it's nice and straight

Bloody good bit of input there mate. On the other hand though, when I phoned them the guy I spoke to recommended I fitted billies first. I'll give them another call and test they're reaction when I mention bringing tonys settings with me. If I get an unsatisfactory response i'll have to suck it up and make the trip to bucks.
What's wrong with the shocks on the car? At 100k+ miles if they are originals they may be clapped out but I would be worried about changing the suspension on the say-so of a garage who isn't a MX-5 specialist. Are ebay special coilovers going to be any good? Be warned that the Bilsteins that were fitted to the JDM S-Specs, whilst great on smooth tarmac, are very hard riding.
TBH with the roads in their current state I would be tempted to look at new stock suspension. Drove my dad's UK Mk.2 in standard form and it was much more driveable in the real world than either of my modified cars!
