Can anybody help. Attempting to release the roof using the internal handle above the screen was very, very difficult. The button you have to press was very hard to push in, then the handle was very difficult to turn to release the mechanism. Once released the roof went down OK. Attempting to reconnect the roof was similar, very difficullt. I am now frightened to open the roof fearing that I will not be able to reconnect. Any suggestions, tips, causes & indeed remedies will be most welcome.

Hi

I have a 2001 CLK320 which I think may be a W207. May be similar set to the W208

I had a similar problem wuth the roof mechanism. Basically when you push the button in and pull down the handle there is a spindle with a lobe at the end. The spindle is supposed to go through a shaped hole in a plate that is riveted to another plate. This mechanism together with the arms that lock the roof in place are all held together with these rivets.

The rivets failed on mine and a new mechanism from Mercedes was £500 plus vat.

I managed to take it all apart and get a friend to replace the broken rivets with bolts and all works well now. It does all come apart OK an dmore importantly go back togeter OK if you are OK with the spanners.

It may be different on your model but probably similar

Good Luck

Many thanks for your reply. I think I will have to wait until the weather brightens up before attempting to mess with the mechanism.
Does anybody have a picture of the Roof Unlocking Mechanism ?

A mate of mine has a 1998 CLK cabriolet, with power roof problems. The roof has just started to open, released at the front, then stopped and is just hanging there.
As far as we can tell, and I'm helping him over the phone which isn't a lot of use, the manual operation of the roof mechanism is done from inside the boot - which won't open. Are we correct in assuming manual roof operation is done from inside the boot, or is there somewhere inside the car to stick an allen key, like under the rear seat on some BMWs?
I'm guessing because the roof mechanism is part way through it's cycle the boot release is disabled, as it does on BMs - won't even open manually with the key in the bootlock.
Does anyone know a way out of this other than a ratchet strap up from the door mirrors across the front of the roof to stop it blowing away when driving? wink
