Hi all
My kids are all wanting to go to a themepark and im not sure where to take them.
Anybody have any good reviews or past experience in the past.
I would like to add my boys are 9/8/6 years of age if that helps.
Any advice would be greatly recieved.
Thanks kavanagh.

Thorpe Park's probably your best bet from Swindon

Alton Towers is, in my opinion, the best theme park in Britian.

ETA: Hell of a trip from Swindon though.

Go to Alton Towers for two days and have a night in the hotel.

You'll get early access to the park, access to the water park and massive brownie points from the boys if you get them a feature room.

Alton Towers and Thorpe Park for under 10's? I don't think so...unless they're over 1.4M tall they won't be able to get on anything. The poor old 6 year old certainly won't be happy.
Chessington is ideal for that age group.

As mention TP or AT.

TP is about 90 mins from me whereas AT is about 4 hours. With that in mind I always go to TP. AT might be a tad better but I am not so sure, TP has lots of good thrill rides but AT feels more 'themed' but that didn;t make much difference to me as it would children.

Its all good telling us thier age, but the key question is; how tall are they?

I think the height for most good rides is about 1.4m. Thorpe and Alton are equally as good in my opinion.

Alton requires far more walking between attractions and by 1pm your children will have aching feet. The excitment may keep them from moaning for a while after that though.

If your children are above 1.1m then Chessington is probably your best bet. Its designed more for shorter people (otherwise known as children) and more rides will have the lower 1.1m limit.

If I had to choose between the 3 though, Id say alton towers is worth a vist but only because Ive done Thorpe park to death.

As said elsewhere, all the big rides at AT or TP will require them to be over 1.4m tall.

Legoland might be a better bet, closer to Swindon too.

Need to know what rides they like. Will they ride the likes of Nemesis or will that be too much? Both Thorpe and Chessington are good parks, Legoland is okay. Alton has the "big" rides, and it's neighbour, Drayton Manor, is a very good park too.

Most rides are 90cm or 1m height limit. But that does make them tamer!

Dragon coaster is a good introduction to the world of coasters though- there is also the baby dragon apprentice too- for the very small!

I remember going to Legoland when it first opened, and I just managed to get onto the car bit, was awesome at the time. Carnage, but awesome.

From experience Alton Towers is starting to show its age, yes it has new rides but nothing ground breaking. Its main attractions (Nemesis, Oblivion) are close to 15 years old, other rides are 20 or more years old. Other than a refurb or facelift they haven't changed much since being built.

Things like the Monorail, i know its not a ride as such but its 23 years old and was bought 2nd hand in the first place. The Skyride, yes its been refurbed buts its also 23 years old and has been closed due to serious fires twice in the past few years. The Rapids & Flume are close to 30 years old, i remember the flume from when i went as a kid and although its been refurbished, its still the same as it was 20 odd years ago.

The new 13 ride sounds good but its certainly not going to tempt me to go back there for a good few years when Thorpe Park is so much closer and has rides that are a lot newer (i.e. less than 10 years old)

Down to choice at the end of the day but you and the kids will enjoy yourselves just as much at Thorpe Park and for less money

Took my 8 year old lad to Legoland last year & he absolutely LOVED it. It's a brilliant park for the young 'uns, BUT, it is expensive. That said it is worth every penny & I didn't come away feeling that I'd been ripped off. (£38 for adults & £28 for kids).

Well worth paying the extra for the Q-bots (They reserve you a place in a queue for certain rides), iirc the Q-bots were £15 per person, we only used them on about 4 rides, but they saved us at least 4 hours of just standing in queues & in hindsight were well worth the money.

hell of a trip?

About 3 hours.

Flying to Oz is a hell of a trip, not going 3 hours in the car. hehe

Alton Towers is brilliant and the hotel is great too, not been in the water park but it does look good.
