Hi All,

My wife has just given me a call and told me the PCs at home are giving her grief.

I saved money and bought Chinese versions "Ahem" of MS Windows Vista Ultimate and Office 2007. These worked well for sometime but after i accidentally installed some of the updates, it has started to tell us that the product key is invalid.

We now have the choice to enter a valid key or use the computer with reduced functionality - so we have used the reduced functionality for now.

I think it best to buy a non Chinese version of this SW now so where can i get this at a decent price and what do i need? I have a desktop and a laptop that i need to run both Windows and Office on.....

You can get Windows 7 HP for around £70 each and you can get a 2 license Home and Student office for around £65

I don't think that either machine is up to running Windows 7 really.

Vista ultimate seems to be about right for what we need.

Yep Vista will strain an old PC more than Win7.
Also, just install OpenOffice for free. It's 99.9% identical to Office.

I agree with both of these points. I shan't do the old +1 thing!!

Thanks to all that rsponded. I managed to buy a MS windows Vista ultimate from a freind at work. Its un-opened and i entered the product key and all is now well.

Another question though - Does Windows Vista ultimate ever stop these annoying updates? It seems that each time i update and then re-start 10 more important updates are waiting....

What do i do??

The updates are normally there for a reason, do them.
Make sure you install Microsoft Security Essentials too.

You say you've not been installing the updates due to the chinese software?
if so then yes the amount of updates will reduce once it catches up, but as some updates require a reboot it'll take however many reboots are needed to install them all.

may have been less updates if you installed the latest service pack.

Oh yes, if it is Vista download the latest Service Pack and install that first, it will save you a lot of updating.
