XP to Vista - mulitple email accounts...?
Discussion
I am wanting to upgrade my home PC from XP to Vista - mainly for the kids to benefit from the Xbox/Media centre thing that comes with it.
But I'm a bit puzzled about how Vista handles email.
At the moment we have Outlook Express which allows us to have 4 email accounts (or identities) - one for each member of the family.
Does Vista do the same?
Or would I have to set up 4 seperate startup User Accounts and each person access their email through that?
But I'm a bit puzzled about how Vista handles email.

Outlook express is not in vista . But I'm a bit puzzled about how Vista handles email.

You can download windows live mail http://download.live.com
or Thunderbird http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/
You could have 4 user accounts and each user has a password for their account.
Or 1 account and have the mail client setup for all 4 email accounts, but everyone would see each others mail

I was just looking at Thunderbird. That seems to do the job - each person has an account and their respective email address going into it.

As far as I can remember, Vista ships with Windows Mail, which is actually quite good.
That seems to be the case from what I've been reading, but the drawback is that it can't have seperate identies - all 4 email accounts just come into the one. Which means you end up having to wade through upteen facebook notifications from the kids accounts.Muntu said:

If you upgrade to Windows 7 there is no mail client, you will have to go the Thunderbird / O2K7 etc route
Pretty sure you can download the windows live mail client for 7 which is pretty much the same thing as that which ships with vista. If you upgrade to Windows 7 there is no mail client, you will have to go the Thunderbird / O2K7 etc route

You can install Windows Live Mail on Windows 7, and it's reasonably good. I don't believe it has an 'identities' function though. OP, why not just setup seperate Windows accounts for each user? Much better way of doing things. If you upgrade to Windows 7 there is no mail client, you will have to go the Thunderbird / O2K7 etc route

Tell them they're end users, and use of your computer is a privilege and they should be grateful!Fastra said:

Just want to clarify..!

Spot the mistake. Seriously would not bother with Vista, my laptop came with it & within days i had set it up to dual boot with XP. XP always works(& much faster), Vista is so slow & regularly crashes.Fastra said:

Funny you should say that..!
Just been reading some reviews on Amazon. The majority slag it off!
At the moment I have a fast(ish)/reliable machine (ok - the 8800gt card runs hot but Rivatuner takes care of that) that all the family get along with fine and it NEVER crashes!!!
I only wanted the 'upgrade' to hook up the Xbox though media centre and I've got a copy of Vista from my dad.But I'm not going to bother now.
I may do it in the future, but only when going through the upgrade route to get to Windows 7 - XP to 7 is a new install rather than an upgrade (in't it....??? )
So cheers everyone anyway, I'm going to leave it for now!

The confusion here is that in WLM and thunderbird you can have multiple email accounts in the one email session (thats my interpretaion of multiple email accounts.
Your interpretation of email accounts is that equivilent to identitie.
See below for what IO mean. George and Fred email accounts in the one email session

But can you then password protect Fred and Georges inboxes for privacy?
First of all go Windows 7, Vista sucks, 7 flies.
If your children are in school then you'll qualify for educational licensing of Office 2007 (http://www.software4students.co.uk/)- then you can have Outlook plus Word and Excel all for under £40. Outlook can either have all email accounts in one mail profile under one Windows user, separate mail profiles for one Windows user or under Windows 7 (or Vista or XP) you can have separate users. Separate user accounts is the best as then each user can have their own documents folders, desktop, browser home page and favourites etc etc. And of course under the latter you don't even need Office/Outlook as most mail clients should support separate user profiles.
Also note if you're not doing an in-place upgrade but a clean install (a clean install is better) - you need to download the Windows Vista/7 Easy Transfer for XP (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2B6F1631-973A-45C7-A4EC-4928FA173266&displaylang=en) - this can let you transfer all your files and settings to a usb disk then be able to install them all on your newly installed operating system.
