Recently went to an outdoor show, and there were lots of old people, and on many of the blokes amongst the love/hate knuckle tattoo's lots of them had a swallow on each hand.

Now I am interested to know what this means, as there are so many conflicting opinions out there..

To be fair, these guys were 60/70 and they were clearly tattoo's of purpose, as there must have been 20 people I saw that had them.

Some of them had lots of military tattoo's and I read that this is something to do with the Navy but I want to know for sure.

A guy I used to work with had them - he said it was a Navy thing!
Although he later had them removed!

AFAIK

Swallow on the hands indicated military service of some description not sure which service though

Swallow on the neck indicates Prison Time

I may be wrong but that was my understanding

Just go up to them and pat them on the bum and wink.

That will answer your question one way or the other wink

"Ex-Sailors of the British Royal Navy have a swallow tattoo on both hands above the thumbs as a symbol of a successful voyage."

That will be the one then.

They looked pretty cool if I'm honest, a tattoo with a meaning is so much better than some of the tribal ste people get today.

I hope you were only there because you were trying to bring-it-down from the inside.

I thought it was: These fists Fly... although 'I live in a council house' covers all bases I guess.

It means they like a bit of bum-love.

Having that means you (specifically you) have permission to go up to them and slap their arse.

Come on, after that other thread, you've got to expect this....

Was speaking to someone who runs a pub near Marble Arch a while back and got talking about tattoo's and serving people with them. He said that if he sees people with swallow tattoos they are generally trouble and doesnt serve them. Those on the neck and between the thumb and 1st finger. From that I took it that it was not a military tattoo (although wiki states otherwise) but either a jail / way of life marking.

You went to a caravan show? Did you get lost on the way to somewhere else?
