Hi all - I'm trying to locate a benchmark in the immediate area of a site, but I'm damned if I can find a database or map with the benchmark locations on.....anyone got any ideas?

You just have to use the OS maps and be a little ingenious. What type is it?They are usually found on buildings or stone structures. However, there are a whole raft of newer types installed by the likes of the EA and are just small brass studs.

I'm sure someone will be along soon with a list of co-ordinates you can look them up by!

I've looked on an OS Map where I know there is one, and it's not marked.

I'm now trying to find the closest one to my site and I cannot find a map with them identified on.

I found a website showing the brass plaque benchmark locations, but there aren't any within 3 miles of the site.

They've stopped maintaining the benchmarks now and removed them from some series of mapping. Most surveyors use kinematic gps to get the data instead I think.

Havent spent much time surveying with what I do at Uni, but did a week long surveying course. Leveling from 3 miles would be a little tedious, especially since i was somehow 1.2 metres off over a closed loop of about 12 readings.

However, the total station we used for distance measurement was a cool piece of kit.

I know benchmarks are now obsolete (sp?), but I cannot seem to find this information anywhere else.....as far as I'm concerned it should be public information, but everywhere I look you have to pay for it.

All I want to know is the level AOD of something near my site - how hard can it be?

Not very hard as it happens. Took me about 30 seconds on google:

http://benchmarks.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/pls/htmldb/...

Type in the six figure grid reference (ie TL2020) in the box at the bottom and it'll tell you the nearest benchmark.

Thanks - that's a great help...as it happens I was looking for something that wasn't there - the nearest benchmark is still over 3 miles away....

I'll just email hundreds of people until someone can just tell me what the levels are.

Indeed it was, however my angles were all spot on so every cloud has a silver lining.

I blame the fact it was 5pm, in the middle of norfolk, in early march and it was bloody freezing.

Plus I never did get to grips with parallax.

Be careful if you do find one! Saw a guy in Basingstoke who was doing some renovation work who took a wall down, remodeled and rebuilt! he put the benchmark back in a random place 'as a feature'!
