Should self service checks out have a sign next to them saying "you must be of average intelligence to use these"? Its just that you often see people use them and have so much trouble with them its untrue. Seems to be a simple thing of scan item, stick item in bag and repeat as necessary however I saw one bloke today scan item and stick it back in the little basket and just couldn't get the idea into his head that he had to stick it in a bag.

(You don't have to stick it in a bag, do you?)

It's not just the shoppers thatare the issue, the self-serve till hall-monitors can be as dense as hell. I was buying some beers via one of these and it prompts the hall-monitor for a code to verify the shopper is older than 18. He had to do it 4 times as he kept getting it wrong.

I always Stick It To The Man by pressing the yes button when asked "did you use your own bags?" when I didn't.

They are not intuative machines.... being over 6 foot tall... I CANT see the slot under the counter which gives you change in Note form.... took me ages to find where my change had gone to the first time!!!!

The machines are slow, and dont actually respond to what you tell them with the onscreen buttons...

For some reason in the Asda near work, it has a sign by these checkouts saying "About 20 items or less".

Priceless!

Try actually using your own bag then..I often pop in on the way home from work with a rucksack on or a reuseable bag and it confuses the hell out of the poor things. On two occasions I managed to crash them completely so I've come to the conclusion that picking the queue with a pretty checkout girl is the best option (or the shortest queue if I'm in a rush)

Do not use if buying anything that could be illegal, ie alcohol, lighter fuel, spoons etc

Do not use if buying a tagged item

Do not use if buying a meal deal

Do not use if buying a discounted item

Do not use if buying a newspaper

Do not use if buying bogoff items

Do not use if buying an unweighable packet of crisps

In short, unless buying a loaf of bread (not-discounted or bogof) - do not use.

In my local tesco they work with all the issues you mention above! They're pretty good!
