(Reluctantly) thinking of knocking down my garage
Discussion
Me and my g/f moved into a grubby old Edwardian semi-detached house in suburban west London about 10 months ago. We've done a full interior refurb on it, and are now turning our attention to the garden.
As the grainy Google Maps picture shows, it's a corner plot with a fairly limited amount of outside space and a small detached garage. I haven't measured it properly yet, but it's too small for our E90 3-series, and my guess is that it is about 13ft long by about 7ft wide, probably just about enough for a small car.

To free up space and allow more light in, we are considering knocking down the garage, leaving us with just a driveway. This would link up the existing lawned area on the west side of the house and the shady patio/courtyard on the north side. We also want to increase the height of the boundary wall (currently about 3ft) to give more privacy.
All sounds very logical, but the nagging thought in the back of my head is that I AM KNOCKING DOWN A GARAGE and am therefore losing vital "man space". Also it potentially reduces the viability of running some kind of impractical sports car when I hit my 40s and the midlife crisis kicks in
Anybody have any thoughts on this? We will be getting advice from professional landscapers, but just wanted to get the PH viewpoint on it.
Am I nuts to get rid of a garage? Or should I just accept that it will always be full of junk, and therefore I might as well knock it down?
