The final straw for this lappy as I finally managed to pour coffee over the touch pad of this one last night.

Now if it is turned on it all starts to go a little random on its controls. With it off an external mouse works fine, but not ideal for a lappy.

So!

Recommend me a good spec lappy for around £500.00, ideally XP if poss (alot of my install stuff still works on XP) Ideally lighter than this current (five year old) one.

No need for BluRay or any toys.

Help please.

Samsungs are good, I have a Q45, albeit broken when I tripped up the stairs holding it open, and an NC10.

You can pick up many cheap £300-400 bargains on Ebuyer at the moment that offer very good hardware for the price. Some of them do not include the operating system (Windows) but do not see this as a negative as it means they used that £70 or £80 to up the hardware secification.

Aslong as your current Windows XP install is not a branded Dell one or something and you have the Windows XP re-install disk, then a simple call after putting it on one of these new laptops will have you going with maximum bang for buck.

Make sure it has the intel i3 or i5 CPU, its the only mobile CPU worth bothering with at the moment.

I've just got a new Dell Vorstro with I5 CPU, it's whole kilo lighter than my current Dell Percision, is 17.6 inch screen compared to 17 inch, is thinner and has the extra number pad key pad.

Also in same position as OP with stuff running on XP but have gone with windows 7 as you can run "xp mode"
