SONY PS3 To Remove OS Features

Sony have decided to remove the install other Operating System feature from the older generation of units, i guess it wont affect many but to me i bought the 160gb limited edition for exactly that reason to use as a media centre with Linux installed.
Where do i stand?! as they will be removing the feature, i have to agree for it to be removed or i cant play online!
The product will no longer be fit for its use, and leaves me with something i do not want?

old news, yep they removing and theres a hold load of people i know thats mailed sony threating to go to court over it as they say they bought the console and that was one of the feature' even states in the manaul and they apparently cant just take the feature away, long storie, sony are running scared at the minute, theres an update on the way too
also linux isnt running full power but an exploit is on the horizen to enable that which could lead to alot other, even maybe hello world, dont under estimate linux on the ps3 eithe either, but i strongly think its for april fools
The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS� feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS� feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS� feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS� feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,� as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

I can see why Sony are doing this TBH - why retain support for something I'll wager 99.99% of PS3 owners will never use when that pulls resources away from other fixes, and also gives them a large security black hole?
As soon as you open up your console to a user customisable OS, particularly one as powerful as Linux, you've basically given some brainy sod the key to your intellectual property and the whole system and it's resources.
Whilst I like the idea of being able to run Linux on PS3, in reality I can't see myself ever doing it and I don't think I'll mourn losing the ability to do so. The PS3 already does everything I need of it as a media centre and games machine, and they've added signiifcant functionality with the iplayer icon etc.

That's besides the point, where do you draw the line? Just because you don't use Linux that doesn't make it okay for Sony to remove a feature that was available from launch. What if they decide to remove a feature that you do use? If they suddenly discovered there was an exploit in Modern Warfare 2 that allowed you to play copied games would you be happy for them to apply a fix that made the game unplayable, all in the name of 'security'?

In this case, the second Sony owned and maintained website, detailing how to install an alternate OS on a PS3. In a legal sense, Other OS is an advertisement feature of the applicable models of the Sony PS3.
As such, Sony is legally obligated to honor that advertisement. Should they disable Other OS with the oncoming Firmware update, they would be committing an ex post facto "Bait and Switch", according to US Consumer Protection Laws.
This being said, I highly encourage all PS3 users who feel jilted by this change to stick to your guns. Post in the forums, call their customer service hotline and, should the need arise, find a Class Action suit to join. Despite what the detractors may say, the law IS, in fact, on your side.

lol the old lets club together and get a class action suit. Hundreds of people say this every day across all the forums of the world and as usual they are Law STUDENTS rather than lawyers (usually based on a hypothetical discussion in the student bar with a lecturer).
You will probably find when you bought the PS3 you agreed to terms and conditions in the licence to use it. I bet you somewhere in there they reserve the right to add and remove features, especially if it is in the name of security.
If you could sue them because they changed something, surely hundreds of people would be suing Turn 10 because you cant use the Dyson now in S class??

Here is a video demoing my "custom firmware". It's not any sort of version string change; I would have added something showing off the new features of 3.21, but oh wait, there aren't any.
This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file, but only from 3.15 or previous. It's possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I'll know when my infectus gets here.
No release date yet, use the proxy hack to play online with 3.15
Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into "hackers." There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I'd be thanking you
