Are new ones really that expensive then? Unless the pads and disks are miles out from each other, pattern-wise, I've never seen the point of doing this, unless it is to reduce unsprung weight. I await correction though! biggrin

Dont waste your time and money just buy new disks. to skim them they'll no doubt go under their min thickness. You have a nice car look after the important parts of it brakes are on top of the list, and this is coming from a pikey!

I know there's a fair difference between £50 to get a pair of discs skimmed, and £300 for a pair of new ones. But is it really that much more for decent brakes?

My Scooby tends to ruin disks quickly. It gets friction hot-spots causing a warped-feel to the pedal after about 10K miles. A new set of disks and pads is a couple of hundred but Subaru themselves (Crossroads, Tredington, near to Stratford-upon-Avon) skimmed them for a fraction of that price and they were absolutely fine - still well within the thickness tolerance.

Anyone lathing disks will only do so if the end result leaves enough meat on the disk. They wouldn't set themselves up for a claim against them, so I'd say go for it.

Car has stood for a while it's 7 years old and now done 5k ive done 1.5k miles and had the car 6 months.
So disks are hardly worn must have some pad wear marks on them due to standing.
Car brakes ok just this slight judder under light braking.

Hmm, perhaps skimming is the way to go then. Just had a new set of discs and pads all round on my car, but boy was the old bus ready for them. The old ones were in a shocking state.

Bit the bullet and bought a pair of disks £330

Pedal so smooth now and that's immediate effect.

Did drop by my local garage on the way home for his advice and he agrees they are knackered 5 pad marks on the inside of 1 disk.

So will see but i reckon i guessed right smile

good choice bed them in gently and dont hold onto the brakes at junctions etc after hard braking and they'll last ages.
