Engagement/wedding gifts

Have been invited to an engagement party which is in a couple of weeks, the couple already live together in their own house and have set the wedding date for next year, what is the rule of thumb regarding a present?
Do you buy a small gift for the engagement and then a decent gift (or pick from their wedding gift list)? or something else?
