I have been offered a contract to work in Tel Aviv for around a year. Now my initial thoughts were to jump on it - I'm sure to regret it later on if I don't, but I thought I'd seek advice from the endless well of knowledge that is PH first.

Has/does anyone live in Israel/Tel Aviv?

What is it like - obviously I'm aware of the history of the region, but from what I have read Tel Aviv is supposed to be a pretty safe city.

Obviously if I move I will spend most of my time in Tel Aviv, but while there it would be rude not to visit all the historical sights, and float in the Dead Sea. How safe is the rest of Israel for travelling around, and can I buy/rent a car with my UK licence?

I have thousands of questions - hope this has kept it pretty brief - but would be genuinely grateful if anyone has any experience they'd like to share thumbup

I've visited dozens of times. It's an amazing city. Very relaxed (by Israeli standards), amazing food and nightlife. Right on a gorgeous beach. If I was offered a chance to work there I'd grab it with both hands. It's not Jerusalem (where I have had a number of close calls...)

Oh and the women...best I've ever seen. Even if they are miserable.

Been there countless times and used to work there. I worked there at the hight of the last Intefada (sp) and never felt unsafe at all. Tel Avib is so much fun. The weather is great, the women are stunning and generally really nice, most people are very friendly, the beach is lovely and the night life is amazing.

If you go, drop into Mikes Place, its just back from the US Embassy by the beach - it's pretty well known so you wont have a problem finding it. Have a Tequilla or two for me please!

One thing I would say is it can seem a little odd in some ways, the same as moving to any country one is not familier with. Go with the flow, don't stress the fact you may have bags searched occasionaly when you go into shops, malls, bars etc and you should have a fantastic time. Sadly the PH scene there is a little lacking as there is a huge tax on importing cars so you tend not to see or play in much thats interesting but driving a 4x4 across the desert to Petra is both a fantastic drive and breathtakingly amazing to see.

As you might be able to guess, I have had a lot of fun in Israel :-)

Do it.

I haven't been for a few years but TA is a lot of fun - great town.

Don't even think about it, JFDI. As said above, TA is a brilliant city, and Isreal a wonderful country. Not nearly as unsafe, especially in TA, as some would have you believe. Herzliya is a particularly nice part of TA to live in, right on the coast.

Mind you, isreal is probably the only country in the world where service is worse than the UK, and public transport even worse!

Cheers for all the replies - I'm leaving in 3 weeks biggrin

Really looking forward to it. It is a place I'd never thought I would get the chance to visit - let alone get to visit and get paid for!
