Smolensky finally makes his mind up!

Breaking news this morning. Nikolay Smolensky has sold the English car-making company TVR to the Russian manufacturer AvtoVAZ for a rumored £20,000,000.
A spokesman for AvtoVAZ has said that the English name would enable them to sell their own brand motors to a much wider market.
When asked about the intentions of the company to continue the manufacture of the sports cars for which TVR have become so famous a spokesman said that they would shortly be releasing details of a brand new sportscar which would compete directly with the Chinese MGF, the Japanese MX5 and the Proton Elise. It will be based on a tried and tested engine/chassis platform currently used on the Samara 1.5 which would bring the TVR marque up to date in terms of reliability and environmental efficiency.

This is a rather inspired move:
- a shared sales heritage with both brands having sold strongly during the Thatcher era (with the Samara 1.5 being made specifically for the UK market) that may play well if the Conservatives come into power in the UK
- the Samara platform has a versatility that allows TVR to compete with the breadths of model that the likes of Porsche offer (from sports coupe, through 4x4 through fast four seater)
- Lada's participation in the 2008/2009 WTCC and the current sponsorship of the Renault F1 team brings a motorsport credibilty that will complement and reflect well on the TVR brand and performance image
- Lada's experience of using carburetors in emission controlled environments also offers the potential to enhance the famed exhaust rumble of a TVR with a dramatic induction sound as well.

In 2005 I was at the last stages of completing the purchase of Number 100 of the last griffs, at £29'900 I got cold feet about it's price and future value, I didn't think it would be worth 29k in five years time (2010), and I still don't think that now, although it’s not out of the question of it being worth 29k in the next five years. Fernhurst I believe would price it at 45k now!
