Hi

I am organising an event in July 2010 for around 300 odd people. I have everything sorted except my waiting staff. Im looking for 16 - 18 staff for approx 5-7 hours on a sunday afternoon /evening in Cambridge.

Anyone know where I can source potential staff and for a good rate.

What should one look to pay for waiting staff per hour?

I'd suggest ringing round the local recruitment agencies for a quote, as they would have a number of experienced temp workers on their books.

Students? Even in July there will always be penniless students in Cambridge.

£6/7 per hour.

Surely there is a specialist recruitment agency in cambridge dealing with waiters/esses, service and hospitality staff etc. I know there is a good oen in Manchester (not much use)

Do you need silver service trained, expect to pay a bit more if you do. You'll need to know whether you need to provide the uniform too. Usually you can stipulate black trousers/skirt and a plain white shirt/blouse.

Speak to one of the colleges - they all have their own silvers service staff on hand for their events (usually a mix of one or two experienced head waiters, and 17/18/19 year olds who make up the bulk of the staff), they may be able to help you or put you in contact with someone who can). Most colleges only have a 'fully staffed' service a limited number of nights a week, and this is much reduced in the uni holiday periods..

All the temp agencies I've worked for as a student do this sort of stuff. They supply clean (ish) students in black trousers / skirts and white shirts / blouses. It was 10 years ago so no idea of the going rate.

Don't let one of them chuck a full gravey boat over the bride. nono (Not me.)

I have tried one agency so far and they have quoted £11.27 per hour which im thinking is a bit steep. Are these prices negotiable?

The agency takes a fairly hefty chunk for themselves... The worker is probably getting about £6 an hour from that...

As per the above I don't think you'll get it much below that to be honest. The agencies will cream a decent whack off the top.

Good sugestion about contacting one of the univeristies - they may be able to point you in the right direct - or may even have a "jobshop" type thing where they keep details of students looking for particular types of work - I know mine did.

give wizard recruitment in huntingdon a call, I used to know a girl that worked there and never remember the prices being that high.
