Advice please on Impreza STI
Discussion
Hi everyone,
Have searched online and forums but could do with some definitive advice. I will ask direct questions with the hope of some good replies from you guys!
Looked at STI Spec D today. Really liked it and the Missus gave it the thumbs up too, so doing well.
This is what I need to know:
1) Prices for 70k, 80k, 90k services?
2) Realistic MPG. I do a 24 mile commute with a 30s, 40s & national mix. MPG and range from a tank?
3) Any expensive parts? Electronics and Brembo brakes bits are my main worries!
4) Anything I have missed?
I have priced up road tax (£435/year - robbing ....), insurance (£845 fully comp) and rough fuel calculations.
Any advice at all will be welcome. Thanks guys.

No idea on Prices for service as I work on them and not at the front desk
STi's -
70K is Oil+Filter change, strip+clean brakes, etc, no fluid replacements such as Gear oil or Diff oil unless needed but should have been changed at last service.
80k is the above but with a Brake fluid Change (Every 24000miles/2 Years)
90K is the big one - Engine Oil, Gear oil, Diff Oil, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Plugs.
Timing belt is every 50k Miles / 5 Years.
Most expensive stuff really is Brakes - you arent far off £1k for a set of discs and pads on an STi.. there are cheaper alternatives about - from well known brands.
30-35mpg on a 2.5 if you are nice to it

I think it's only fair to point out that the mpg figures above are obtainable but involve not just 'being nice' but never exceeding 65mph, never exceeding about 2500rpm and never more than breathing on the throttle. It's possible ut, in my opinion, if you're going to drive the car like that on a regular basis there's absolutely no point in buying it.

fantastic cars, great for a few weeks, get fed up with always going to the garage, not that fast anymore in the real world, yes 100 yard bursts there quick but up a slip road, on motorway your avarage 330d will leave you for dust, and he will be doing 40+mpg!
great for a toy, forget it if your using it everyday!
thats my 2p worth and i have had 2 impreza sti's........

I had a cheeky side-to-side with a buddy in a 330d and I stayed pretty far in front of him. MPG wise, on a town run you're looking at around 24mpg (on 98 RON), and between 28-32mpg on the motorway. This is from a 2.0 STi. As fo servicing, a 10k one seems to cost £220 (which sounds reasonable), but replacement front Brembo brakes cost nearly £1000.
The forum mentioned above earlier will have plenty more information. I'd love to help more but I'm on my mobile.
Edit: oh and it's roughly 330 miles from a tank on highway rates.

Is that right? 330d quicker than a STI once up and on the move?great for a toy, forget it if your using it everyday!

P.s. You Sir, have exactly the car I want. Though i'm sure i'll end up getting an older one due to budget constraints.
Rapid cars when tuned, but a bit fragile when driven in anger or not maintained perfectly and not so resilient on track. Reasonable to run (apart from fuel) in standard tune, expensive when modified. Drinks fuel. Handling fine for road use but limited on track. Chavvy image and cheap interiors, but engineered nicely in certain areas. Good value for money.
I had a heavily modified 'STi spec' bugeye doing about 330bhp and it was a lot of fun, but pricey to run and not as trackable as I wanted. For road use in standard STi guise I think you'll do well, but run Optimax through it only and don't be tempted to mod it as things tend to go wrong more often and ownership becomes frustrating. You will be raced a lot by chavs/BMW/Porsche drivers though. That said, if they are racing you in their 535d or 330d they will be seeing almost as abysmal mpg as you and the Subaru will be more intense. They have a better interior though and don't get Saxos racing them. STi is great car for the money now. Not sure anything but a Spec C or Type 25 would tempt me back, but if you haven't had a Scooby before, an STi would do you proud. Just budget for the fuel.

330d leaving you for dust? Not if you've got one of the hawkeye imprezas (2006 onwards) with the 2.5 litre engine, they produce heaps of torque great for a toy, forget it if your using it everyday!

My mum has had a Spec-D from new and absolutely loves it. Refuses to even consider anything else!Have searched online and forums but could do with some definitive advice. I will ask direct questions with the hope of some good replies from you guys!

1) Not sure on the servicing front as hers has only just cracked 17k...
2) MPG is actually better than our previous 2.0l WRX. You can realistically drive everywhere below 2.5krpm due to the waves of torque from the 2.5, you should easily exceed 25mpg on a normal drive and even 30mpg on the motorways sat at 70.
3) Brakes are expensive. Just had the rear discs done due to pitting (lack of use...) and it was verging on £500 (the handbrake is inside the rear disc). Electronics are japanese and therefore cause no trouble really.
4) Expect everyone to want a race. Dont be fooled by the leather interior and 'sat nav', it is not a luxury vehicle. Get money knocked of if it's not fitted with the standard Bridgestone RE070s, no other tyre really comes close. If people ask if it's a WRX dont get offended, it's a compliment. Don't get too addicted to enthusiastic starts away from the lights, clutches don't last too long if you do! BMW drivers will always try and race you on the motorway because they think their 330d is faster... just let them pass.

When my dad and I stole it and ran away to germany for the weekend:

Brakes needn't be a thousand pounds - you can buy disks which are arguably better than the OE brembos - two piece, alloy bell, steel rotor - from the likes of Godspeed.
I also think Camskill do pretty good pattern bits which get good reviews for road use - just looked £70 for front discs on brembo equipped cars.
RFL needn't be silly money either if you buy and import.
You can do it well and within a budget as there is a massive tuning community selling very good alternative bits. I think the fuel cost will shock you though (being theoretically possible and achieving in a city are two very different things), and super isn't always readiliy available, which can make cross country blasts a bit of a pain.
