ribon cable

hi all ,the ribon cable that goes into the steering wheel hub has dropped inside the hub and i dont know how to get at it ,i think ive got to take the steering wheel off and get at it that way but dont know any ideas how to do this and is it an easy job or a bit of a git

You first need to take off the panel underneath the dashboard. I think there are two wingnuts just above where your thighs sit in the car. Once you have taken that out you need to get your head upside down in the footwell and you should be able to see into the back of lower instrument binnacle below the wheel.

done that and i can see the slot in the back of the steering wheel hub where the ribon cable plugs in but the cable has fallen into the hub, how do i get into the hub to retrieve it do i just take the wheel off and the big bolt in the middle or is there more to it

Yup, wheel off then remove the big bolt. Try and tug the wheel off as gently as you can - difficult because they sometimes need a BIG tug - because the ribbon cable will just spring out and unravel itself - it's about 6ft long, so try and stop it doing that. Reconnect it, and use a blob of araldite to glue the multi pin connector into the slot.

It's an easy job - just keep that ribbon cabe from jumping out, and make a note of how it winds round. You'll be out driving in the afternoon
