Griff rear brakes
Discussion
I have a 2000 model Griff that needs new rear discs due to corrosion on the inner faces, is it just a case of swinging the caliper out of the way and tapping the disc off the hub with a mallet, any addvice would be good and where would a sensible bloke buy a new pair of discs and pads from and any idea how much ,thank you for any help given.
They are standard Ford parts which you can get from any motorfactors, although you should make sure you get good quality fast road pads not the standard production tat. Changing the pads only, you could have left the fixed part of the caliper attached to the upright and just split the front slider to swing the piston assembly out of the way. However, the disc is trapped by the fixed part of the caliper so since you're changing that you will need to unbolt the whole caliper from the upright, pull the caliper (plus pads) up off the top of the disc, the disc is then free to drop off (perhaps with a little gentle pursuasion from a mallet) and then you can pull the pads out of the calipers. You will need to wind the handbrake adjuster back in when you fit new pads which basically means you need to turn the piston while pushing it back, as if you were trying to screw it back into the caliper. You can get a standard "Ford caliper wind-back" tool for ten quid or so which makes this trivially easy. You probably want to flush the brake fluid while you're at it. Don't forget to pump the brake pedal to reseat the first side before you tackle the second, otherwise you'll overflow the reservoir. And remember to bed the pads in afterwards.
There is a blow by blow description with piccies in the bible of what to do. As for replacement discs... measure them and then check. Second Pete's comments about decent pads. I would also be wary with pattern parts - get a good make as some discs that seem cheap are usually cheap for a reason.
