numer plate dating

simple question but one thats confusing me, ha, my number plate begins with x and ends in y, so being that my tasmin is a 1982 the suffix is the relevant part, so does that mean that if i was to change the plates i could have any prefix or suffix letter?

As I understand the plate thing you can have any plate put on your car that does not make your car appear newer than the actual year of manufacture.

i realise any plate i put on it has to be equal or older, my question is really whether i have any limitations on what plate i can have as y is the oldest suffix and as the prefix means 2000 as far as i can tell its meaningless

Your car is an '82 on a Y right?

You cannot put any plate on it to make it look younger - fact.

You cannot put a prefix plate e.g. A123 ABC on because all prefix plates came out after your Y, so would appear to make your car younger.

The only thing you can put on is a Norn Iron plate - YIW 1393
or an older suffix plate - ABC 123A
or a pre suffix plate - ABC 123 or 123 ABC

The fact that you have an X at the start of your plate is irrelevent as are what comes between that and the Y.

ok i think i get what you mean, so the current x prefix is meaningless but if i was to put a new plate on, the prefix would be relevant and so make it seem newer?

Supposing your plate reads XWV 123 Y - you have a suffix of 'Y' indicating the year. You do not have a prefix at all.

Supposing your plate reads X 123 WVY - you have a prefix of 'X' indicating the year. You do not have a suffix at all.

If a plate reads AB 51 CDE then the '51' indicates it was registered in Sep 2001 to Feb 2002.
If a plate reads AB 02 CDE then the '02' indicates it was registered in Mar 2002 to Aug 2002.
If a plate reads AB 52 CDE then the '52' indicates it was registered in Sep 2002 to Feb 2003.
etc.

Yes.

Your plate starts with an X then two further letters denoting the county of registration (for example XDV would be Devon, XAF would be Cornwall, XAA would be Hampshire) The X is a totally random letter. The next three numbers are effectively random too and the Y denotes your car was registered between August 1st 1982 and July 31st 1983. From August 1st 1983 your car yould have been registered on an A prefix(A123 ABC) and any prefix plate would make your car look younger so is not permitted.
