Hi All,

Anyone know if they are fussy about windows being down on trackdays? Some scrote smashed my drivers side window today and by the looks of things at this stage i can either run minus window or with perspex duct taped in... i suspect the latter is unacceptable..

really dont want to lose the track time!

Cheers

Steve

I've usually been asked to have them open a little - not sure what the purpose of that it. I don't think there would be an issue with no window glass.

Trackdays.co.uk @ bedford

I was thinking i will just remove the perspex.. but maybe if its left in they might think that is ok providing its secured..

Its a mx5 so in theory i would have the roof down. Do they make caterhams and the like excempt ?

trackdays.co.uk is just a booking site, if its Bedford on Monday then thats Bookatrack, try calling them/emailing them. I would imagine perspex fixed securely would be more acceptable than nothing

If they allow totally open cars out on track (ie caterfields with just aeroscreens, no sideglass at all) then an open window shouldn't be a problem, should it?

This will me my argument if whoever i speak to about it decides they dont like whats happened.. I suspect i should be ok one way or the other.

I'll stop and mention it at the beginning so hopefully my legit explanation and being considerate will help me.

I got pulled up on this at a wet trackday in my MX5.

With the roof down (where it usually is) I always had windows down, never been told to put them up. I decided to loose the side windows to save weight. One day it started raining heavily so I threw the roof up, queue to go on track I get told put my windows up. I pointed out I couldn't, no glass.. He took pity on my as it was thrashing down and let me out but told me if the rain eased I was to drop the roof. I didn't know there was such a rule until then, i now have window glass back.

I can't see the point myself, he said it was to prevent arms getting damaged in the event of a roll, them being thrown outside the car and pined against the roof. How come a full cage on an open top car with no side windows is ok then>? Same problem surely?

In the VX220 with the roof off on the same trackday I was told to put the windows up... Seems very confusing and inconsistant / dependant on the car.

They do like windows up or most of the way up for that reason, obviously it's unavoidable on open cars yes.

He'll be fine, as I suspect the £50 in question was a probably just the tosser surcharge.

That is interesting.
In the USA, most TDO want the two front side windows down, to minimize the breaking glass injuring the eyes of the occupants, and to prevent the side glass from littering the track surface, if broken by hitting the kerbs, or rumble strips.
The BMW club of America (for most of its regions), bans the use of convertibles and open top cars. Strange considering the number of convertibles they sell.
Other sanctioning bodies that allow open top cars on track require arm restraints.

When I run my chim with the roof down, as most times, pretty much always asked to roll up the windows.

By the time broken glass from the side windows is becoming a serious issue there's a lot of other issues going on as well!

Especially with the seats. smile
It is a tacit attempt to slow the cars down, most likely.
When participating in time attacks, windows down is a handicap.
