Metal Structure Design (welding) reference

Does anyone have a good web link on mental structure design? I found a load on welding but not anything on design.

I’m looking for something simple that outlines what type of joints to use for which application, it’s been quite some time since high school welding class!

Example, when is it better to use a 45 degree corner joint as appose to a butt joint when welding up a frame, what are the best angles for cross braces, etc, etc.

Can you tell I just bought a MIG welder?

What sort of mental structure are you planning on building

The first item is a Trebuchet, a request from my 5 year old son. It a good place to start as it has lots of different angles and such.

On the more practical side things like tire racks for the garage and stands

Then a simple a go cart buggy and after that a few more detailed jobs.
