40k what do i buy a 360/355 or 996 gt3?..
Discussion
I am in a similar position;
I think you will find that the Ferrari 360 will give you all the right sounds and reactions, it’s got a great feel good factor about it.
I test drove both the 996 GT3 and the 996 GT2, and while the GT3 has very little under steer and is playful, the GT2 is nothing short of a bullet.
I would really consider a GT2 as it is very rewarding to drive.
My suggestion would be to get a 360 if you want to impress and feel good, but get a GT3/2 for the sheer laugh out loud performance. (Although I am tempted by a bellowing V8 roaring at me).

In terms of test drives these in my experience tend to be short and don't tell you much about the car. Also i suspect that if you tell the dealer that you don't even know if you want a 360 you may struggle to even get a short test drive.
Personally unless you know friends with these cars that will let you have a drive then I would probably hire them - club gt (no association) please google for website have a 355 and 360 but I am sure there are other businesses that can assist.
As to holding their value I have no idea, but the costs of running these cars, especially if you are doing the odd track day, which tends to kill brakes/tyres etc will probably incur greater costs.
have fun

On the road they are bananas, the low down instantaneous thrust is pretty jaw dropping. 4th feels as accelerative and brutal as most 'sports cars' feel in 2nd. I'd say a better road car than a GT3 with a bit more compliance and engine flexibility but they are still well up for a trackday or two, or three ... Just about the best bargain in the classifieds as well at the moment IMO.
I think the GT3 is a futre classic and therefore not likely to drop too much, the 355 has already got classic status as such and I think the 360 has reached a level where it won't drop a lot more either.
However the biggest snag with the F cars is that they are mileage sensitive. 360's with more than 25-30k on them are deemed leggy by some and can make them difficult to shift ridicolous I know but we seem to have an issue with it in this country.
So if you intend to do lots of miles I would say GT3, but if you want a car that gives you a buzz just driving it, try the Ferrari.

wise to have some cash in the bank with a 355 IMO
e.g. example bill:
Replace engine cam belts, check aux belts, check fluid levels, adjust tyre pressures, remove bumper and overhaul clutch release bearing, brake fluid change and bleed, replace ARB bushes and rear drive shaft gaiter, replace speedo sender:
parts + labour £5102
and that's just general wear and tear, a few regular jobs adding up, and doesn't include any of the expensive 355 gremlins like the cats or the manifolds needing replacing.

Yup agree with keeping some cash around for a Ferrari, this year was big service on my 355 and:-
Belt service, clutch, new clutch release bearing, one new radiator (fins had all fallen off), couple of perished pipes replaced and new brake hoses, couple of gaskets etc and £5750 later the car was perfect again!
Overall it seems to cost about £3000 on average a year including insurance and everything

Agree with post above about joining a car club and trying the cars over an extended period. I was in your position looking to get a weekend car but could not decide which. Joined a club and tried all sorts of different cars each over at least 300-500 miles. You can then make an informed decision.
My choice would be the GT3 by a country mile

Please give me a call if you would like to discuss, the pro's and conns of different Ferrari models is a set of scales depending on what your expecting from the car, ie feed back, balance, servicing costs, outright speed etc.

Depends on what you want it for. The 355 is a great car but no match for a GT3 on the track, the 360 is faster than a 355 but still not as good as a GT3. If you'll be using it mostly on the road then buy which one excites you most because frankly that's all that mater's. Just try and think which car you would be most excited about seeing everyday in your garage.
Another few points to bear in mind are if you don't have a garage or park your car on the street, you would probably be better off with the GT3 because it would be less stressful leaving that parked on the street than the Ferrari.
Hope that helps, let us know how you get on.
