If I buy a blackberry off eBay, without getting a blackberry add on to my Vodafone account, can I set it to imap to my servers? Without the add on, what email other than presumably web mail accounts can I use?

You can get other mail with things like the Google Blackberry widgets, but unless you really like Blackberries, I'd look elsewhere.

I've had smartphones for the last decade, and finally got forced into a Blackberry this last job. Loathsome thing.

Horses for courses, I prefer a blackberry over any other every time. Nowt better for email, admittedly there are better for browsing. It all depends on your requirements.

Any Windows Mobile, any Google phone, most Nokia & SE from the last couple of years biggrin

Blackberry has a place, but thats in a corporate environment, not a personal device.

Do you want touchscreen, stylus, physical keyboard, decent camera... be specific hehe

Any windows mobile, thats a joke right? Some of the worst phones out there are Windows mobiles.

Or even worse you could go back to the mid nighties with a Nokia.

Blackberry has been incredibly successful moving in to the personal market. That's why out of the top 10 selling smart phones in the US Blackberry have 5 devices and the Pearl's sales are predominately to the personal market given it's not designed for the corporate environment.

That was about the IMAP thing.

I know where you're coming from with the popularity thing, but then again, that was the excuse for boardroom use, and BES is still a horrible, over-privileged piece of software smile

Not seen the Pearl, but I'm not a fan of the OS or the UI, and thats before we move onto the whole look and feel of the physical device.

Oooh, does that mean we have a Third Side on the eternal schism? biggrin

BES is clearly the most advanced mobile platform out there. How many others have you used?

Have you tried any recent Blackberrys?

It really is just a good phone, with reasonable camera and the imap email ability for 4 or 5 different email accounts.

Currently using a 9000, which is slow, crappy UI, and utterly hateful in terms of actually sending my censored email when I send it, not when it decides to do its thing (quite random, not part of a signal thing) and I really truly cannot see how its an advanced mobile platform, sorry. Maybe I need educating, but its an opinion shared by a bunch of my colleagues in IT. Note: not Judas Priest T-shirt IT.

For a CXO, its magic pixies giving him email, and I have no issue with the systems ability to securely get stuff beyond the firewall.

In terms of handsets & overall mobility, I personally gave up on Nokia a while ago, and have a few WM devices, an iPhone, a couple of Android devices kicking around my desk, and more than enough Enterprise Mobility deployments, but thanks biggrin

I work in the mobile industry and have hands on with most mobile platforms out there and it is by a country mile the best.

Nokia and Windows mobile have been churning out terrible devices for a long time, hence the reason carriers have been dropping them from their line ups.

I have at least one mobile of each platform.

My personal favourite is Android (nexus one) and I'm also a big fan of the Iphone but choose a 9700 for business, simply because it's the best at what it does and has an excellent battery life (read twice that of the 9000).

Also if you're having problems with your 9000, you should get your BES admins to sort it. It's not a usual occurrence on the 9000. The 9000 is absolutely rapid when properly configured and set-up.

I think if there is one knock that could be labelled against RIM, it's the fact they always play safe and never really go out on a limb with the UI but stick to what people like and know.

O_C, I think we're pretty much in rabid agreement about Android then (everyday is a Hero at the mo).

Point taken about the BES setup (big SI and cobblers children).

Might be my device, but the battery life is appalling and thats with a shiny new battery (might make it to 3.30, with BT on and Wifi off.

PS Any ideas about getting a Tytn II's touch screen back to life?

Still, its all good fun.

OP, buy any Google phone.

I don't think there will be anything decent in the OP's price range where as a Blackberry curve or the something like that would be great and possible with the money.

No idea how to fix a broken touch screen on one of those phones. They normally just get chucked away when they break.

I couldn't do my job without a BlackBerry. Huge global enterprise, and I spend more time away than at home. As soon as you get into large numbers of emails daily, which you actually have to reply to from a mobile device, then I don't think the iPhone or any other non-keyboard device comes close to my 9000.

For personal use, and browsing, the iPhone kills everything else. Trying to reply to emails on it is hateful though, and despite the compatibility, when connected to Exchange, the battery life is a joke.

BlackBerry is junk for browsing the web, so I just carry both, although I know I'm in the minority when it comes to email volume and the amount of time travelling across the pond.

My Bold had terrible battery life too. I managed to treble it by turning 3G off and sticking to 2G only. Bad solution to have to make to get a decent length out of it, but I don't get 3G out here in the sticks so it suits mesmile
