My dad's just bought a new PC and at the same time got a wireless router from AOL.

As he had recently bought a laptop the first thing I did was go to set the laptop up for wireless internet access.

It transpires that the PC world guy who set his PC and router up has not made any note that I can find of the wireless network security key. Is there any way of establishing it or are we locked out of wifi forever?

Annoyingly in the AOL startup booklet there is a box where it should be written down for future use. Empty.

There may be a sticker on the bottom of the router with some random letters and numbers? Failing that, if you know your broadband username and password then do a full reset on the router?

Has the router also got ethernet ports on it? If so connect a PC up via a cable and you'll be able to go in to the settings (usualy http://192.168.1.1/ ) and reset the key.

Googling default password and the router model number should yield the results whatever it is.

Pistonheads - mulit-disciplinary genius matters.

Thanks to all, the IP link worked first time, it's a random word I would never have guessed and my Dad certainly never chose.

I love you guys...

If it's an AOL Netgear you may find that the login is admin (lower case) and the password is - password (again lower case). You should have been given a Netgear installation guide leaflet.

Still assuming it is a Netgear router click on Wireless Settings in the left-hand panel (the three panels move independently) and scroll down the centre panel.

To logout scroll down to the foot of the left-hand panel.

It was 'admin' and 'admin', also printed on bottom of router.

Can't believe anything to do with AOL was so user-friendly.

Not duff, just different.

Interestingly the same link doesn't work on my router at home, but I know the key thank goodness.

Some routers seem to use http://192.168.0.1/ instead, as I discovered at the weekend when setting up my mothers new Netgear router.

Or even more fustratingly: http://192.168.0.254 or similar.

Drives me bloody mad it does when I try to config mine.

open a command prompt and type

ipconfig /all[enter]

look at the default gateway and use that in the http link instead of 192.168.0.1
