my 323 is ticking. you can only hear it when you're not in the car. its coming from the exhaust side. thought it could be tappets, topped up the oil and had no effect.
I think it could be the exhaust gasket blowing, or exhaust manifold could be cracked. I have a spare manifold and gaskets are cheap enough, but how hard is it to remove the manifold enough to change gasket?
I have no ramp or pit.
I hear the studs can come out so I will replace them as well.

If it's only making the noise on tickover check the spark plugs for tightness, probably No6 but some times No5, I had this on a single Vanos 328i.

If that doesn't cure it it may be a lazy tappet so an Italian tune is in order IE fresh oil and filter followed by a 1.0+ lepton blast on a quiet road with a lot of revs, this also worked for me on an M50 525i

the ticking is at idle but gets faster as revs increase.

will do oil change next weekend as it needs it any way. while I'm there I can check spark plugs
