Cylinder Failure
Discussion
Hi Guys, I have an Evo 5 gsr, I have had major problems with the car since I bought it 6 weeks ago and the garage I got it from are a bunch of sharks and are doing my head in. It had an oil leak when i was driving home and the garage told me it was the rocker cover breather had come off under pressure and oil was squirting out of it and caused one of the cylinders to get damaged and fail. I had an inspection done by insurer and this isnt the case at all as there is no pressure in the hose or the head for this to occur. Can anyone tell me what other things would cause a cylinder to fail? The car did start to loose power 2 days previous and was missfiring, but when reported to the garage they blamed it on the timing and ht leads but would not look at the car to find out exactly what it was. Thanx for your help guys
Your description of cylinder failure is rather vague, and could mean anything.

Someone there can reccomend somebody local who would be capable of looking at it for a proper diagnosis and perhaps repair.

Yes indeed it is the 3rd cylinder, its going to a garage on friday to get striped down, but my mate had a look at it and the piston rings on he 3rd piston have broken and fragments are in the sump and crank case and also in the oil pump. What is IIRC? Im not too clued up with engines. Been told this aint my fault as ive done less than 200 miles driving at speed limits, but report will give the assholes where i bought it the proof. just hope they accept it this time. GUYS STAY AWAY FROM EVOLUTION CAR SALES, DUNFERMLINE, FIFE. Claim to be import and tuned car specialists, NO THEY AINT. Thanx for all your help
IIRC If I Recall Correctly.
Such damage could be done in 1 mile let alone 200.
Either overboosting, wrong grade of fuel or other similar issues could cause it. It is impossible for such damage to occur during normal off boost driving, so it was beng driven "on boost" for this to happen.
Although obviously if everythiung is in fine order and the correct grade of fuel is being used, drivng in that manner should be perfectly safe.
