I am looking at getting a nice home office with a separate broadband and phone line for a hobby business. Whilst I have been doing research I have seem VoIP phones and I have got myself confused! Basically I want a phone which I can have conference type calls with another office in the UK and others in Australia and Hong Kong. BT does an unlimited calling plan for phones but I don’t know how this works with VoIP as I understand it is done over the broadband connection.

Really, could someone explain how this all works? This is what I need;

1. Broadband in the home office
2. Separate phone line to the home office
3. Conf call function
4. Voice Mail
5. Call forwarding

Any clear basic direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hi OP
I sell hardware not the actual line provider side but here is my 2p worth
1. Broadband in the home office
If you get BT broadband they will give you a home hub / biz hub that has a phone socket on the back of it that ANY normal phone can plug into and make calls on your BT BROADBAND line. If (say) you go with coms.com you need an IP phone that plugs into your router - budget £100 for this to get a decent one
2. Separate phone line to the home office
If you want more than a VoIP line to the office get BT to install a dedicated line on a new number but a VoIP line should do it for far less (if you have STRONG broadband)
3. Conf call function
Dial into eg powwownow.co.uk say 4 of you dial in at the same time with an access code and you chat away without specialist kit for low cost. If you mean you have say 3 people just at your end and others in other countries you need a half decent conf phone so all of you can be picked up say a Polycom or a Konftel
4. Voice Mail
VoIP based systems have this as either an option or included - check out coms.com as a provider
5. Call forwarding
As above

Hope that helps
