Even when no programs are running, the Task Manager shows that there are 70 (yes, seventy!) processess still running. Is this normal? I mean, wtf is the thing trying to do? Calculate the meaning of life, finding a cure for cancer and if Roy Chubby Brown is actually a comedian all at once?
I cannot work out why the laptop has to work so hard when doing very little. Any advice to improve its performance? Windows Help- what a joke. Not one little bit of help did it offer.
Have I been hijacked by some malicious software or bug? Should I just reload the system again?
Many thanks in advance.

Take a screenshot of your task manager, with the bias on cpu usage, and post here.

Amazing what it will pick up - I use a Belkin cooler pad as well - and that picks up loads of dust.

Is this picture helpful? I don't think CPU useage is too bad; it fluctuates around a fairly low percentage.

50% memory gone is very confusing?

Fan look OK, fairly clear of debris.
But anyway, would the state of the fan have an effect on the high number (70) of processes which always appear to be running?

Ok.

When did you last have a fresh fresh brand new copy of Windows XP/Vista/7 ( whatever operating system you are running) on the laptop?

Are you sure you are fully up to date with your drivers?

Without wishing to be rude, and I value your input, but can somebody tell me if it is normal for 70 processes to be running when no programs are active?

Number of processes - depends a bit on which windows version. I have currently 98 processes running on my laptop which has Windows Vista Home Premium. I've only got Internet Explorer running (to post this) and Outlook for my mail.

I don't think 70 is unusual, but as an earlier poster said, to check, go to http://www.malwarebytes.org and download their free program.

Not at all.

I have 38 running.

Can we have more information on what laptop it is etc.

It could be a matter of lots of bloatware running.

Can we also see what processes are running in the process tab.

You could have alot of spyware etc.

As is the norm with computers and cars, it could be a variety of things. More information, better help wink

Agreed. Sorry about that, reading too quickly. But virus scan?

My Vista'd up laptop was running about 90 processes, and I managed to trim it down to 70.

You can go to www.ccleaner.com and download the program for free, give your lappy a good clean out. Also go in to 'Tools', 'Startup' and shut down whatever programs you find that you don't think you need to start and run automatically whenever you start your laptop up.

Mine is 87 processes and normally is about 70 too, constantly overheats and it cuts out when it overheats- usually in the middle of itunes sync and virus scan
It's an acer and someone told me that Acer is prone to this, nearly 3 years old.

I'm a woman, with a non tech man in the house- he only seems to be able to work the Xbox, not the laptop
Someone would have to talk me through how to clean it without unscrewing the wrong parts frown
I have a warranty somewhere- all of my stuff for this has disappeared- can't find warranty info, restore disc or manual, not fussed to be honest

There should be a serial on the bottom of your laptop.
