AWStats is free and pretty decent. Uses your server logs so requires access to the server.
Plus side is there's no additional server load and you don't need to insert code on each page.

Weblog Expert Lite is free and very good indeed.

I used to use 123LogAnalyzer which was very rapid and produced good results but my log files got too big, causing the programme to crash and they refused to fix it.

I use extreme tracking:

It's free, but only works for home page stats and you need to put their icon on your home page for it to work.

I use both Webalizer and AWStats both are free.
Both require telnet or SSH (better) access to your server.
I'm quite happy with AWStats.
It basically processes your server logs and outputs a neat graphical webpage with yor stats on it.
You can setup a CRON job to perform the task or
allow live updates (via the stats page).

I've used FastStats for the last few years, which i'm well impressed with. IIRC they have a trial version for download, but the full version cost isn't big money though.
