Thinking about one of the above to share the mileage with my current TVR.

So if I spent circa £9000 - £10000 to buy it, ran it for about 6,000 miles per year what would the running costs be like?

Is there a good online buying guide anywhere?

There should be an online guide or two in the PistonHeads Porsche section.

I would give the SC a miss and get a 3.2 from 1984 onwards, they are generally cheaper to run and had significant improvements. They start from about 8.5k LHD, about 12k RHD. I would aim to get a 1987 one or later as this model year (in LHD at least) has a G50 gearbox which is more modern in feel that the older 915 unit.

Budget a couple of grand a year to run it. Servicing will be about 300 GBP a time (say once or twice a year), various age related wear items maybe about 500 GBP, a set of rear covers about 400 GBP, then a bit left over for contingency costs.

Generally buy the best car you can afford - a nice SC is better than a doggy 3.2 Carrera. The 204 bhp SCs (1981 on) give pretty much the same driving experience as the 915 gearboxed 3.2. As Dom says, the G50 boxed Carrera is the best of the bunch, but don't let that put you off a car with a 915 box.

Be careful out there - there are a lot of blown over, tired cars and it's easy to get taken in by a nice shiny car.

I bought a tidy late SC to run with my TVR wedge. It cost me £12k about three years ago and was by far the best one I saw. There were some real dogs around though so be careful. Prices have softened a bit since then so you should be able to get a decent one for £10k. Condition is everything - don't worry about mileage, mine has just turned 150,000 miles.

Should be entirely feasible and, as someone has said, buy on condition, not model.

Loads of specialists do these but look particularly at 911 Virgins or Paul Stephens Specialist Cars. Both are really good but Paul, particularly, really knows his onions.
