For the past two years, we've climbed the Stelvio by approaching from the NE (Spondigna/Trafoi direction, the views that you see with all of the hairpins) but the next time that we're there, we'll be approaching from the South, but which road? We'll be coming from the Lake Garda direction so I'd quite fancy the SS300 from Ponte di Legno (as it's the nearest) but the SS38 may be wider. The difference in distance and time is 19 Km's and 4 minutes (in my favour to my preffered route), but I'd appreciate your thoughts please? Thanks.

The SS300 takes you over the Gavia Pass which is brilliant .... but will at at least 1/2hrs to your journey ....
Here is my vid coming from Bormio the other way to understand it more ....

My personnel recommendation is to go up the SS38 cut across to the SS300 at the Passo di Mortirolo which is unknown but brilliant fun then ride the Gavia Pass

Thanks Gareth, the Gavia Pass looks stunning, a little narrow in places so will have to driven with a little bit of trepidation wink.

We'll actually be setting off from San Marino first thing, so I think I will do the Gavia Pass on the way up to Bormio. Thanks for the videos, food for thought.

Just a note if you aren't too keen on narrow roads then avoid the Passo di Mortirolo more like a cycle track in places especially the North West side.

That is the Passo di Mortirolo which cross between the SS38 and SS300 if its too narrow just take the SS300 to Passo Gavia and miss it out
