Blu-ray questions

It's time I upgraded to blu-ray, but I have a few questions for anyone in the know 
I'll be buying/using an external BD drive, connected via USB to my htpc.
First question, will WMP12 or VLC play BD content, or do I have to get another media player? Second question, if I buy a BD drive from the states, will it work as should with region encoding and so on in Europe?
