Mid August holiday, no idea what to do!

Mrs Paolow and I are very stuck. we booked a week mid month in August off but the plan we had has now fallen through. We now have a week to kill but no idea really what to do with it and a budget of only about 1k for the both of us.
We are desperately short of inspiration and are completely open to ideas.
We are seeking to avoid anything scuba/snorkel or similar related which makes it a bit trickier.
I have considered that this is a bit of a 'one off' holiday and as such will gladly go along with wierd one off ideas - but what? Iceland tour? trans siberian express?
If anyone has any ideas please post for the sake of my sanity!

Why not try the Black forest southern Germany? I would suggest Pension Williams in Seebach should find it on Google or Tripadvisor
