Re - wiring headlights

I'm not able to use the car at night at the moment as only have side lights.
Have replaced burnt cable into control box and re-wired main feed direct to board.
Has anyone replaced the whole circuit?
If so was it very difficult or a complete PITA?
Just wondering what to do next, wether to order replacement box and direct wire to it, or have a go myself at re-wiring new circuit, or just restrict my driving to daytime activities, or take a rather large hammer to it.
Any practical sugestions would be great.
