Lymington Yacht Haven - Any berthholders or locals?
Discussion
Hi All,
We're currently just around the corner, which is very pretty but a little bit quiet for us. Looking for a marina with a bit more going on, and nearer the shops and pubs/restaurants etc. I also need to be near a chandlery that's open at the weekends because;
a) our boat is now 8 years old and is starting to become a little attention seeking (fitted a new impellor this weekend but forgot to buy gasket sealer - the cover panel leaks and nowhere open!),
b) we like a newspaper at the weekend,
c) I like pottering and can spend hours in chandleries looking for new projects...
Lymington Yacht Haven looks really nice, we popped in for a coffee today and enquired, they have berths available for us pretty much immediately.
I'm keen to know if anybody is familiar with the area? Good and bad points? Crime? Wind? Tides? Ferries? Anything bad about any of these?
I originally come from down here, so I'm aware that getting through Lyndhurst at rush hour is a nightmare!
We definitely want a pontoon mooring. We've been on bouys and trot moorings for quite a few years now, and are a bit fed up of dinghies!
It seems the ideal spot, but before I make the call an spend ££££ I would like to know if anybody knows anything I don't....
Cheers!

evening all!
i work for the company that owns the 'other' marina in lymington... a bit more characterful than the yacht haven, much more protected from the prevailing s.w. winds/rain and also cheaper (we have held our prices for the past 2yrs). we are also much closer to the centre of town. we have berths available too!
funnily enough, i did actually berth my own boat in the yacht haven last summer (i had the hammerhead immediately adjacent to the entrance) and it was really really lovely, but it was very exposed.
you make your choices etc etc... either marina is great, as both are in lymington which is just the most fantastic little town to be based from.
as for negotiating lyndhurst in the summer... there are ways in and out of lymington which avoid the lyndhurst jams... feel free to msg me and all will be revealed!

The berth I've been offered is actually quite close to the salt water pool, so on the less windy bit (sort of).
I'm guessing you're based at the "parking space for a boat" + "opposite of off" marina?
I had a look here, but Haven has free wifi (actually quite useful for me - I work from home but would happily work from boat instead if wifi is available), which the other place charges £110 a year for.
It was also £700 cheaper for the annual at Haven, based on their website prices. Or did I miss something? For £800~ a year, I'll happily walk another 500 metres to the pub!
I'm guessing there's no point in asking anybody for a deal right now? Every marina I've enquired at has been able to take us straight away, but I'm not expecting a freeby as I know it's not normal. Is it worth asking d'you think?
Either way, I'll likely be seeing you around!
Cheers.
Hi
Berthed at Lymington Yacht Haven for 3 years now. Excellent position.
Staff could not be any more helpful. I do a lot of single handed trips and they always are happy to help
on the fuel berth etc. Services like the boatyard ( ropewalk marine ) and the bar are very good.
The advantage in my mind over Berthon is avoiding the small sailing boats that mass in the mouth of the river.
There are thousands of them in the summer and they swarm all over the Berthon area. Add these to the ferries and LYH is
better positioned for an easy life on the water.

Hi Alex. Didn't realise you worked at Berthon. We rate a couple of berths there, in fact I'm just getting ready to go down to my RIB for a blast! I work at BHG Marine, supply you with a lot of Yamaha parts and Avons etc. With regards to the original sort, I'll post some comments when I'm home on my computer rather than my mobile. We've had berths in the Yacht Haven too. Dan
Back on my PC now, been out on my RIB all day!
The Yacht Haven is nice, very protected, a little windy but the water is calm. I've had boats in there and we have several customers with boats in there, I've heard nothing bad about them. Berthon is a little further up the river so a little further to travel, plus you have to negotiate pass the ferries and sailing dinghies etc but it's still very accessible. The only downside with Berthon I suppose is it has no gate codes to get onto the pontoons, you can just walk straight down onto them. Yacht Haven has security gates preventing you getting onto the pontoons. The toilets and showers in Berthon are lovely!!!!
The river is fine, no access issues. It's deep and regularly dredged and heavily "policed" by the harbour commissioners so there's virtually no speeding or other silly antics. PWC are banned. The slipway is very good, it's steep and accessible with a good car park and facilities so it can be busy which means the river is busy when it's warm but that shouldn't put you off. There's a good community here and I love living here. Everyone is very friendly and polite I find. People are all happy to chat and comment on your boat etc which I think really makes your day!
I would say go for it...by the way, what boat do you have? I could offer you a run up the river in my boat if you like to see the area from the water?
Dan

We're actually tied to my existing annual until March next year, and are already fully paid up anyway, so will think about moving in the early Spring 2011.
Might even have a new boat by then too.
We're sort of kind of maybe possibly thinking of chartering our boat, and/or a new one we're looking at too, just to help with the mooring costs etc. Not 100% sure yet though.
Anyway, we might pop over to stay the night over the summer, and get a feel for the place.
Cheers.
we are moored in Christchurch ..just...
Lyndhurst was a pain until you get to know the short cuts round it.Its easy when you know how.
In fact we are up the M3 and after 5 years ,even on the busiest hot bank holiday we can get home without hitting too much traffic by using the scenic route.
Whats it got to do with Lymington you say??????Nothing, apart from we have been looking to move nearby.
