I could get an Orange 222 with 26" wheels into the back of an Audi A6 with the wheels on, so....

RS6?

Impreza WRX wagon. Easy get an ok one for £3.5k, it's not the same chav icon that the standard Impreza is and its got an ok size boot. If you want something bigger then a Legacy GT-B would be good. Or an E46 330 Touring, you might get one of those for the cash I'm not sure, if not how about an E36 328 touring.

I have such a vehicle. You can get an unassembled bike in the back if you lay in on its side, or if you wish to be neat, you can take the front wheel off and lower the (bike) seat and they'll stand upright.

Only problem with a 330 that I can think of (though I don't have one, if I did I'm sure I could come up with more) is that its difficult to get it with a manual gearbox. Not into Autos myself.

If you've only got one - or perhaps two - bikes to deal with then an estate isn't strictly necessary. Probably easier to load in and out, but you can happily get two bikes into the back of a Peugeot 106 (okay that doesn't help much as a quick motorway cruiser, but as an illustation...)

I'm looking to replace my daily driver in the next month or two and the candidates for me are:

VW Corrado VR6
Peugeot 306 GTi6
Renault Clio 182
Skoda Octavia vRS
Warm 3-Series of some description

(in pretty much that order)

Of those the Corrado is said to be a squeze with two bikes, but one is fine inside and you can get bike racks to suit. The rest are fine with two full size FS mountain bikes in the back.

Agree with this. Also if you want you can add an Interga Type R or a Civic Type R on to this list. My mate has an Integra and gets his bike in the back no problem, I used to have an EP3 Civic and it was good for 3 bikes plus kit (at a squeeze, 2 bikes was comfortable)
For smaller cars you will need to remove the front wheel obviously but thats all.

Wouldn't you be better off getting whatever you wanted for £3300 and then spend a couple of hundred on top notch roof bars and bike rack?

I can fit 3 bikes in the boot of my focus without putting the seats down, still with space for kit. I've got an eco diesel variety but would recommend the ST170 for more thrills.

The problems with bike carriers are security and fuel economy, plus potential scratches to the paint if you're a bit hamfisted/knackered after a ride.

Years ago my dad had a Volvo 240 Estate that I learnt to drive in and spent many happy weekends lugging 4 bikes and blokes up to the Lake District in it.

Looks like a V50/A4 Avant might be on the cards next for me...

Subaru legacy, Volvo 850R and Saab 95 Aero Estate have all done me well and allow a bike in without changing a thing.

I've tried an e39 540i with thule bars and let's just say whilst the car is great I've moved on and the roof kit is up for sale - I'm back to a car that'll take the lot inside.

Out of all of the above I have to say the Saab was best. Looks different and a bit more dynamic, aero is great for massive midrange grunt on the motorway when needing to travel out to a meet.

Get one with the AC3 radio package and an aero has all the comfort toys you need - just perfect for that achy but satisfied ride home (checking the rear view mirror for the mud splatters) biggrin

I've got an A4 Avant and the load space is okay but not great. Lots more room in my Mitsubishi Galant estate though.

The choice is much more down to the OH's preferences than my requirements. She "doesn't like estate cars" but the V50 and A4 Avant are just about acceptable. I can carry the MTB on the Caterham anyway hehe
