This is a not-uncommon problem.

I have a Netgear WiFi router. It worked fine with WinXP, the problems started with Win7.

Basically the desktop, which is connected by cable, will not 'see' the WAN on awaking from power saving mode.
I have disabled the 'sleep' on the network card.
The laptop which is WiFi connected has no problems, even if the desktop says the router isn't connected.

It isn't a major deal, I've found that if I select the 'fix problems' banner on the network icon, it will search for a problem, report nothing found, and hey-presto it's working again.

Similarly, when the browser can't connect to the WAN, if I make Outlook do a 'send/receive' it normally makes the connection OK. I can see this happening via the network icon in the task tray.

I do have latest firmware, and sifting through all the crap on most 'help' forums, I get the impression that for some reason it is usually Netgear that gives this problem.

Have you met this before, and if so, how did you fix it?

Bought D_Link instead. hehe Got fed up with very similar problems, even with Vista.
Sorry I can't be of much help.

I would go one further and say buy a Draytek Vigor 2820.

After being plagued with various problems over the years with all the different cheapo routers and their little incompatibilities and quality problems, the Draytek has fixed everything smile

Doesn't sound like a router problem to me, more likely a problem with Windows. Do you need to hibernate your PC? Can't you adjust the power settings to always be on and just use a screensaver, or shut down when you're not using it?

Errrm redface thank you and there has been an update on the firmware. Will report back later.

Thanks folks - I'll make sure I'm up to date, then monitor the performance.

FWIW - I've run these netgear routers for several years now and been very happy with their cost/performance.

Maybe also check for driver updates to network card too? smile

I'm certain it's a W7 problem. It wasn't there with XP.
I understand what you are suggesting, but I quite like it being 'almost on' during the day, when I'm in and out quite frequently.

It isn't a major problem, it's just a 'scratch'!

Maybe try updating your NIC drivers then, as per lestag's post smile

FOLLOW UP.
It seems to be fine now. Because I'd had the problem for a while, even though I'd previously checked and upgraded the firmware, I'd stopped looking.

The latest router upgrade appears to have done the job.
