On behalf of a friend of mine with a Chimaera ( 1997 ) and a nice 290s ( 1990 ).

He took the 290 for its MOT today, and passed, but had a small issue pointed out to him. The sump has been grating/rubbing on an anti-roll bar ( or cross member or something like this ) and its presumed that an engine mount has worn to excess on one side, causing the engine to drop on one side.

I have yet to roll under the car myself to see whats going on ( hence the ignorance ), but I gather from my friend that the sump is leaking a little. So he has asked me to search for a replacement sump ( the MOT station said " get a steel one " ?? ) and he wants a complete replacement engine mount kit ( he asked to look for poly one's, but I am doubtful of there being poly engine mounts at this time ).

Does anyone have any thoughts, links, hints or tips ?

Many thanks !

Give TVR car parts a call on 01884 266755. They stock the engine mounts. Its a common problem and not expensive to fix.

Original sump is steel so don't know what they're on about there ?

If you search "engine mounts" and "sump" you'll find a wealth of advice.

Ps when you say "your friend" is that like when people say "my friend has a nasty rash what should I, oops I mean he do about it" ? laugh

www.rallydesign.co.uk search for RD410
See here too

Cheers !

Sadly it is a friend who is in his early 60's, with a Saab 9-3 Turbo, the 290S ( with the nicest custom exhaust I have ever heard on any car ) and his more recent Chimaera he bought after selling his Marcos. ( lucky git ).

I'm stuck with a poxy DTM calibra Turbo at the moment.

Anyway, thanks for all the info, I shall let my friend know what I have so far. I had a feeling there would be issues in replacing engine mounts, and the sump itself so I'm not surprised its a tough job. I will let him decide if he wants to have a stab at it himself or hand it over to a better equipped garage.

But I should think he will be happy just to source the parts first.

Thanks again everyone, massive help ! Much appreciated !!!

I have actually bought a replacement engine to replace my dented sump as it was easier (and cheaper when you take into account the other spares you get) than locating a sump itself.

I have now found this place

Passed all the info on to the tvr owner. He's set on replacing the sump as a safer option, and since he needs to do the engine mounts too, its best having a well equipped garage doing it.

Just a small question though, are the engine mounts the same on the 290S as say a ford scorpio or similar ? Or are the mounts specific to TVR ? Its just that his son-in-law works in the parts dep. of the local ford dealer, so likely he can get the sump at a good price, and if there is a ford equivalent of the mounts, he can them that way as well. Otherwise he's looking at the ones from RD, which I'm sure will do the job nicely.

Many many thanks again for all the thoughts, help and support ! Its greatly appreciated. smile

I'd recommend the Rally Design mounts. Having just removed some replacement Ford original items (if that makes sense?) they are made of much firmer rubber and the general consensus is they will wear much less quickly. At only £6 each its not going to be exspensive in parts either.

Personnaly I'd go with the Rally Design mounts (even with staff discount probably cheaper than Ford items).

And I'd be happy with a few quids worth of welding on the sump, would expect serious money from Ford (if still available, main dealers often only keep parts up to ten years after production ends).

But "each to their own" as they say, hope he gets it back on the road soon which ever way he goes. driving

Just had a proper look at Marks link, their price is £77.70 but they reckon rrp is £172.00 yikes

Thanks again everyone for the thoughts, I have been passing the thoughts and ideas and recommendations on to the owner. I had a quick nose around the 2 tvr's today, starting work on the Chimaera propshaft tomorrow. And he's ordering the RD mounts, and getting a new sump for this 290S. Its a shame because the mounts look like they should be fairly easy to remove, but I can also see that looks are deceptive, and its actually a real fiddle, especially without the joys of 4 post lifts and magic spanners and the like.

Callyman, yes its number 12 of the 22 made ( about 18 left on the road I think ). It was owned by Mike Singleton at pentagon rochdale VX dealership. But I use the term 'poxy' because it's been 'modded' by its previous owner in between myself and Mike, and its created a cascade of costly issues which I have been working on. Just in time for the body work to start bubbling in places frown which adds to the list of things to do. But its worth the effort as apart from its rare of the rare status, Mike supplied a folder full of paperwork showing how much he piled on the car moneywise, in the region of 15K over the years and I've spent another 1k on it. Shame I will have to part with it eventually frown

Engine mounts are a "fiddle" well worth investing in a flexi-head 17mm ratchet spanner but there again if you're replacing the sump engines gotta come out anyway ?
