Right guys I have the above amount to invest in a business. Been shortlisting the following:

Petrol Stations/garages
Care Homes
Property

What are your thoughts? What would you do if you had that sort of cash to invest? For the first 2 options id obviously need further finance from banks etc but the returns seem to be very good.

Those look like low risk / low return. How much are you looking to grow/earn?

I would look to find a small business, anything (taking into account your skills and experience) that had a decent customer base, long history and turnover of around £1 million.

It won't make you a millionaire but you will have the opportunity to make a very tidy living out of it.

I am asking aloud, but in a similar situation to the OP, is there any advantage/benefit in approaching either an insolvency practitioner, or the local office of the insolvency service, with a view of buying a business on the cheap. Surely a lot of businesses that fail, fail due to the poor, bad management of the businesss, and not just the trade, service they are in, offer.

That's more than most people save in a lifetime... I'd be thinking about investing it in whatever made you the money in the first place!

Good call. Farnborough isn't far from London, either!

Hi there,

Lucky you in having that amount to put towards a business, I'm certainly envious!!

More seriously, as mentioned, what kind of involvement are you thinking of in whatever you invest in? hands on, running everything and being 'the business' itself? or looking at perhaps getting other investors on board to have a controlling input or perhaps minimal involvement and modest returns?

with the information so far, you 'could' potentially buy anything or start anything but it ultimately comes down to what you want to achieve, high risk high returns, low risk low return or somehow going for the ultimate of low risk and high return! and all practical combinations of those!!

As a 'quick fire' question, my initial thought was 'oh wow, with £300K i know exactly what I'd do' - I won't put it up here as it's potentially controversial although is currently being done under your mentioned option of 'property'. However that's based on my own level of risk taking and return wants, which may well be very different from yours.

If you could put some more information up, that'd help with further responses!

Cheers, Dennis.

Thanks lads. Ideally id like to run the business part time as I have other business interests.

Franchising (mcdonalds etc) seem to be another option BUT the training periods are very long so don't seem worth the effort when im putting down £200k of my own money!

Property seems to be the best bet as thats where this money was made in the first plac smile

I've just created another thread asking the property gurus for some advice.

Any other idea's? Anyone on here in to care homes or petrol stations? Would be good to hear your views.
