Folks,

I'm clearing some old data off disks and moving it elsewhere, but I'm having trouble with 3 files.

They're all extremely large (video files) (16, 18, and 41MB)

Chkdsk says there are no disk errors, and strangely they seem to load and play in Media Player - but if I try to copy them I get CRC errors.

There are other larger videos on the disk that have copied just fine.

Is it worth me trying to load them into Windows Movie Maker or Vegas and then saving them straight out or something? Or is there some way I can recover them (given that they seem to play OK).

Have you tried zipping them before you move them

Just tried it - it seems to work, but the files are all truncated (artificially small zip files, and on copying & unzipping, files are too small). Try playing them (wmv files) and although they say they are full length, then loop before the end (although it still says they are the correct length.

The original wmvs play fine and you can navigate your way around them fine.

I could accept it if the files wouldn't play, but they play fine without glitches. What's wrong with them!?

It might be worth trying a Linux live CD and using "dd" to do a bitwise copy...

dd if=/path/to/file of=/new/place/file

Robocopy or xcopy will sort.

Tried xcopy /c (to force continue) and it won't touch it.

The fact that the computer can clearly read and show the whole vid surely means that there's some way to get it off intact??

Any help with robocopy?

Can't see any "ignore errors" options - it's just saying it skipped it at the mo, no mention of why or any errors...

Use /z /s /r:5000 /w:1

Backup Mode
All subdirs inc empty.
Retry 5000 times to read the file
Wait 1 second between retry.

Do you have backups?

Already tried /z - still gets part way through and stops. How do I get it to restart.

I can't find a backup anywhere. Still have the original footage unedited on DV tape so not the end of the world but annoying.

How can it be that I can't get at the data if Media Player can play the file without any problem?

I don't know to be honest.

/b?

Do it stick at X% or does it say 'file is knackered at X%, trying again'?

etc.

I did try loading it into Sony Vegas but it started rerendering the damn thing. Will dig out vlc.

There are 3 files in that dir that are knackered, and 2 in another, but they are just MP3s that I have copies of. Chkdsk doesn't report any problems with the disk.

Try loading it and then saving it as a new file using Windows Movie Maker - will clear any embedded tags that may be causing your problems. Not promising anything but it may work.

Maybe read this article: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_fix_a_cyclic_redundanc...

It would seem you are up to SpinRite, which presumably isn't free, but...

I've alrady read that - don't want to start writing to the disk until I've got what I can from it.

VLC plays the file with no problems - but converting it or streaming it gives me a CRC error half way through banghead

It's like it's taunting me!

I did have all the source files until fairly recently so I would render the damn thing again but I think I deleted them,
