When trying to use certian sites (Facebook and ebay in particular) the following message appears. I do not know how to capture the screen and so I have had to cut and paste the text but the actual message has a red shield in the left hand corner. It didn't happen when I logged onto here!

Any ideas, I am not very technically minded!!!

Check your system date is correct (hover the mouse over, or possibly click, the clock in the bottom right corner), if for some reason your date is wrong the certificates would show as expired.

Computer's ay! If they were so bleedin' clever they could have just told you that.

In the early days of home PCs I used to freak when it said that I had done something "illegal" used to think that the police were on their way.biggrin

I was quite impressed to find that Windows 7 synchronises its clock with a server somewhere on the internet every week.

XP does this too. To the OP, if your system time/date has changed you *might* find the BIOS battery is shot. Do you turn your PC off at the mains every night or do you leave the mains plug switched on ? WIth the mains on BIOS is trickeld power by the PSU. Switch if off and the BIOS is maintained by the battery. Do it all the time and your battery will eventually die.

The battery is indeed shot, we have not been able to use it unless it is plugged into the mains during use for quite some time. It lasts less than 5mins if used unplugged. Will get a new battery now as it is connected. When we first got it we would use it unplugged and then leave it permanently on charge while not in use, has this caused the battery to die or just age, its about 4yrs old
Thanks

Dont get confused between the battery used to power your laptop and the little coin cell battery inside used to keep the BIOS from resetting time and date.

That's not always a simple job. On a desktop PC it is easy, but on a laptop you might have to take the thing apart.
