Video Overlay Software - Help Wanted
Discussion
I have developed a piece of video overlay software and am looking for one or two volunteers to use it, provide feedback and provide copies of some of the files you create with it.
The software takes a video and data file as input and allows you to create a graphic overlay showing speed, track position etc. I have posted a couple of examples on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/tsxraceproducts
If you are interested, you can read more about the software at our website: http://www.tsxraceproducts.com
I am looking for someone who will be attending a track day in the near future, has the ability to create onboard videos and preferably already owns a data logger. In return, you'll get a free copy of our software and application updates until the next major version is released. If you happen to already have footage from a track day and have matching data files to go with it, that is fine too.
If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks for looking.

Steve,
I downloaded the trial version of the software but it doesn't like my video file
my video recorder is a dv500. I have a DL1 data logger. The race technology software doesn't like the files either.
link to recorder details
http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/dv500-portable-survei...
If you'd like a file to see if you can make the software accept it I can email one over.
cheers
Ben

Hi Ben,
Thanks for your interest. From your description, it sounds like your issue is related to codecs since both our software and the Race Technology software is affected. The link you sent through regarding the DV500 lists the recording technology as MP4, but there are several variations that this could be. If you could send a short video clip to our support email address - support@tsxraceproducts.com, we will be happy to help resolve the issue with you. Could you please also include details of which version of Windows you are currently using, e.g. Vista Home Premium etc.
Many thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve,
I'm interested in this - I have a RaceLogic performance box and have been using a freeware utility to create overlays (name escapes me at the moment). I'm using a GoPro Hero HD camera for the video recording.
The software I'm using creates an AVI file of the telemetry which you composite with the video from the camera. it works, but it's a little slow/fiddley to do correctly. I'm using Sony Vegas to combine it togeather and sync the clips up.
result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_tIplIaGmY
I suspect a fair few trackday people will be using a similar camera/logger combo as they both cheap and good bang-for-buck.
I haven't had a chance to download your software, but it can achevie similar results will less process, I'd definately be interested!
I can supply you with the datalog and the original video clip if your looking for some 'data' to work with.
I have also got some more recent trackday video and data logs which I have yet to combine...
Regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply and the interest. Our software allows you to output a video file with the overlay already completed, which negates the need to use the Sony Vegas software to combine the clips. If you try the software, I hope you will be pleased with its ease of use, but I would like to hear any feedback you may have about it.
The Overdrive software already supports data files captured using the Performance Box so these should drop straight in.
I would be very interested to receive matching video / data files from your setup and hear about how its working for you. I shall PM you with my email address and details.
Many thanks,
Steve.

hey st3v3
Very promising software.
i downloaded the demo, but as i'm using a poor man's data logger (a GPS that suits all the sports i'm practicing) i was unable to load my files to it, and therefore to test it. Maybe there's a way to do it, but wasn't able to find it.
I think this would be a great functionnality to add ; i know more people owning a GPS than a real data logger. People who are more interested in their speed than in the RPM of the motor, or people who do not have a motor !
By the way, there are some sports, like sailing, for which your software would be really interesting with appropriate templates.
I guess a very low price version that displays few basic GPS datas according to the sport (altitude, speed, direction, track...) along with the video would be a hit amongst sports amateurs.
£65 for the basic edition makes it a bit too expensive for the amateur i am, i guess your software is more pro or semi-pro oriented.
If you think my opinion is of interest, feel free to send me an email ( robbywan @ g m a i l . c o m ), i would be pleased to discuss this or to test your production.

There are already variations on this theme.
Overlay software: www.trackvision.net
GPS logger: Racechrono (free) runs on most mobiles
GPS beacon: qstartz 5Hz (around £35 online, bluetooth to mobile)
Get almost any format from your digital video camera, export the GPS data as a csv file, then upload the video and csv into the trackvision package. Bingo.
Excluding the cameras, this a sub £200 video vbox (without the accelerometers shown as a g-meter, but with track maps, etc)

Hi Robiwan - thanks for the interest. I am always interested in adding support for additional loggers. I'll send an email over with some questions in.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Fergus,
If Trackvision works for you then thats great, if you haven't downloaded the Overdrive demo though I really do invite you to give it a try. Overdrive also accepts any video file for which you have DirectShow codecs. I'm confident you will find it much more flexible than your current product.
If you do find your data files are not supported, I would be happy to add support if you send over a datafile. It does support RaceChrono data files - I used RaceChrono to log data for one of the videos I posted on YouTube.
Incidentally, at £125 Overdrive is also cheaper than the alternative you mentioned
Cheers,
Steve.

Hey Fergus, thanks for your help.
actually yeah, there are variations, from the sub-titles tricks to the most high-tech softwares. But i still haven't found what i'm looking for.
I've seen trackvision but i can't afford a $195.00 software for what i consider a hobby
By the way, if i can help improving a software so that it will fit most people needs, and suggest additional functionnality, sure i'll go for it.
Steve, i'm looking for your mail.

Hi. I'm not currently using Trackvision, but have just done some research on putting something cheap together (rather than splashing out on the Racelogic Video vbox, etc). I wasn't aware of your software, but will take a look. It also helps that you're in the UK rather than overseas in terms of initial support issues!
