Long story short: I helped an old friend out last year who was in a bit of a fix.

Well imagine my surprise when a chap later proposed to her and then she asked me to give her away at her wedding. Anyway, I've been best man a few times, so I've kind of got that licked, but never given anyone away (my kids aren't old enough yet). As such, are there any other responsibilities other than turning up at the wedding with her, giving her away and saying a speech at the reception?

Not really. I've not done it myself, but my Dad gave away my youngest Auntie.

My Mum is the eldest of eight and the youngest is only 5 years older than me and their Dad is dead. My Dad is the only one of the extended family to not have a daughter, so when she got married ~15 years ago she asked my Dad to do it.

He was suitably blown away, and yes duties amounted to turning up, giving her away and the speach. Which I reckon is the easiest speach of the lot.

He's quite ill and can't travel (the wedding is in a different country).

Or, as in my case, paying for food and clothing etc from birth to teens, providing a roof into her twenties then paying for (some of) the wedding costs. It never ends!

As regards the ceremony - no.

Son is getting married soon so I won't have to make a speech. Oh joy!

Wife'll want another outfit. Gloom.

Gave my sister away. Wandered up the aisle with her, stood getting very hot, sweaty and self concious as the ceremony took place and that was it.

I gave my sister and mother away (on separate occasions). You have to calm them down a bit before the service and walk them down the aisle then are asked something like "do you agree to give them away" and you say "I do" the only interesting point being you are usually the only one who says "I do" during the ceremony.

You may or may not also have to be a witness to the register, this is up to the couple.

You got it.

By the time my kid sister my dear old Dad had Alzheimers quite badly. So he could be trusted to walk her up the aisle and do his bit in the church but I got the duty when it came to the speech.

Speech traditionally welcomes the bloke into the family. That may not be appropriate. So just wish 'em all the best (and read an etiquette book if you must). Short, lightly funny, kind. That's it.

Dear srebbe64,

I gave my two youngest sisters away - Dad died young.

Tell her she's looking great.
Get her to the church/registry office on time.
Walk slowly down the isle.

Enjoy the free nosh/booze.
Short speech.
Juggle the bread rolls*,

regards,
Jet

  • optional but went down well for me smile

My new wife didn't want anyone to give her away as the obvious people had passed on years earlier. So she asked me to collect her from the door instead when she arrived, and I then escorted her down the isle.

I told my kid sis that either Dad gave her away or I did it and I would seriously miffed if she chose anyone else (as Dad was not really capable by then). She could have chosen my older bro, quite reasonably, but I'm very close to my little sis and really wanted the job.

Srebbe64: It's an honour just to be asked. Enjoy it.
