I was once asked, mid-interview, to step over to a whiteboard and draw a bicycle. Once I'd finished, I re-took my seat and the interview carried on.

Any idea what test was being carried out?

Have you experienced any odd questions/requests at interview?

Yep I recently had an interview (for the job I'm doing right now in fact) where any time one of the interviewers asked me quite a hard question, the other interviewer would instantly answer for me while I formulated a short, non waffly answer. The majority of what I said came down to "er yeah, wot he said".

Result!

Was it an interview with Raleigh Bicycles?

At a guess they were looking at all sorts of things while you were doing that; how much you hesitated to fulfil an 'unusual' request, how creative you are, how much time you allocated to the task, and how you drew the bicycle (ie an old-style one with a basket, an electric bicycle etc).

My veterinary interview at Nottingham vet school was strange, I was asked to do all sorts of things including put my hand in a black box with items in and describe them. I also had to sit there while a labrador slobbered all over my suit and they gauged my reation! University interviews are notoriously strange.

Some sort of personality assessment perhaps. I was asked to draw a pig in work recently for this reason. My profiled personality was nothing like my true personality. Load of rubbish IMO.

I once worked somewhere where the interviewer came out after the candidate had left saying "come here, look at this, it's hilarious!". He'd asked the guy to draw a dinosaur on the whiteboard and thought it was really funny that he reckoned the legs were too long and it looked more like a horse. Apparently he'd given up asking technical questions and decided to go for something he thought the interviewee could actually do.

FWIW the interviewer was a total cock not capable of giving a technical interview (or worthy of any employment as far as I was concerned) and the interviewee had a lucky escape.

I was once asked "if you could go back to our creator and ask to change one thing about yourself, what would it be?"

Answer - to be a bit taller

Interviewer - Why?

Answer - could have played centre half and saved myself running up and down the park as a right back.

I got the job!!

I always ask interviewees why I shouldn't give them a job. The answers are always illuminating, as is the way that people deal with being thrown off balance.

On more than one occasion people who might otherwise have been offered a job have talked themselves out of it.

Was the black box on the guy's lap at the time?

Got interviewed by a lady who gave her name on introduction got the job, turned up on the first day to meet my new boss who gave her name which was exactly the same as the interviewers, but definitely not the same person. Thought well that's a bit of a coincidence a while later thinking about it so checked the company records and definitely not two people working with that name. Never did get to the bottom of it as she left after about two months.

I'd love to answer this, especially if I didn't need the job.

"I'd like massive hands. Why? I've always wanted to clap really loudly."

"I'd have one knee bend one way and one the other, I reckon it'd make picking things up from the floor really easy."

He made no comment about my bicycle.

The only thing I can think of is that it was an 'attention to detail' exercise. About three-quarters of the way through drawing it, I had a sudden thought of 'don't forget the chain!'. It occured to me that it was easy to forget the chain, hence making the bike unusable, so I made sure that all of the components were properly connected.

Some of the meccys here use the draw a bicycle test. The purpose is to see if the resulting bike would be pyhsically possible to make or not, iirc the giveaway is if they draw the frame coming to a point at the handlebars or draw a verticle bit for the headset to sit in. So it could be this if it was a mechanical engineering job

The strangest I've ever experienced was when I was stalked by a guy who ran the recruitment for Car Giant or some similar junk yard about 13 years ago... finally agreed to go for an interview, typical sales interview then was sddenly asked to get up and do an impression of a chicken... wtf?

Cue me standing up and saying...

Thanks for your time but I don't think I'm the right person for the job... you're looking for some kind of ...

Phone call the next day offering me the job anyway - no thanks!!!
