So...how do I know who to vote for?
Discussion
Hello,
I'm 25, currently rent a house from family and we're trying to save up enough deposit to buy it. I appreciate the slight gesture which was has seen stamp duty removed for first time buyers, thanks, but there doesn't seem to be too much there to help people like my girlfriend and myself, especially when we live and work in a very expensive area (Lymington, New Forest).
We both work full time, earn pretty good money for our age I think, but we certainly don't have masses of disposable income and we both just want to have enough deposit to get a decent interest rate for our mortgage. It seems you really need at least 25% to get a reasonable rate. We have no debt, no income support, no kids etc. My step father spent most of his life in the army and now earns very little out of the forces, my brother is in the Royal Navy and my mum is a nurse so public sector working conditions and importantly, the treatment of our armed forces is very important to me. How much bonus bankers get or how much we spend on interest on the national debt are one of those things the news will always go on about! We all know what we think about that.I work in the marine trade however, and being on the south coast, 2 hours from London, quite a few of the my customers are investors of some kind in the big city.
After reading that back it makes me sound rather selfish, but I want to get across my position really. It's not my criteria for voting, I just want to make you aware of my situation. We work hard and save hard without any help from our family (although they own the house I admit) and we feel we're getting very little help or support from the Government to get onto the property ladder or get anywhere really!
I've not voted before and to be honest I don't know where to start. I feel everything is just biased and that during interviews it's just the interviewer digging the politican on how their policies differ or how smiliar they are to another parties'. How do I find out what one party will do over another, can I rely on any information I find or is it all just "talk" to get us to vote for them? I feel like I want to make an informed decision rather than just take a punt on things I hear about in the press so I want to get as much information as I can. How can I do this?!?!?

Download the manifestos (when they are available), read them, think about the issues that matter to you, locally and nationally, decide which of the candidates in your area are best fit with your opinion and vote for them. It doesn't matter what your parents vote or what your OH votes or what your friends vote or what your neighbours vote or what your colleagues vote - make your own mind up. There won't be any one candidate or party that fits your opinion perfectly, so you need to balance the good and bad about each candidate to come to your voting conclusion.

What help do you want or expect?More importantly why do you feel the Government should help you buy a house?
If you cant afford to buy the house you want in the area you want then maybe you should think about moving.
Stamp duty has been lifted for first time buyers, mortgage rates are actually pretty low, even though 100% mortgages and the like dont exist anymore and house prices have been coming down for a while now, I really dont know what else you expect?

WTF ! seriously? why the fvck should 'the government' ie TAX PAYERS, 'help' you to get on the property ladder?you mention welfare of the armed forces and the national debt. firstly the current governments treatment of the forces is a disgrace if not actually criminally negligent. secondly;
uk government debt
1997 357
1998 354
1999 354
2000 320
2001 322
2002 349
2003 380
2004 422
2005 462
2006 501
2007 602
2008 614
2009 794
2010 1015
add to that unfunded public sector pension liability which has quadrupled to over a trillion gbp. no one can tell you who to vote for, but it should be fvcking obvious who NOT to vote for !

Consider this:
The current incumbents have led us into the worst financial crisis in history.
They have spent an unbelievable amount achieving nothing.
They have led us into two unecessary wars at even more expense and are responsble for the deaths of many young soldiers. For nothing.
They have stolen our freedoms and our earnings for no other reason that they need to be in control of us
Whoever is in charge in the next few years is unlikely to be able to prevent our standards of living from falling dramatically and will have an almost impossible task in achieving recovery, but it is imperative that the current government goes before they complete what they have started and completely destroy our Country.

Thanks for all the helpful replies people.
With regards to buying a house, that’s not entirely what I meant but I don’t really want to discuss this here and now. We earn about £44k combined and it’s just that we’re finding it hard to save the 25% deposit required on a house of £170,000, but we’re getting there! There are a few homebuy schemes out there but nothing we’re eligible for or nothing in our area. Something like a reduced interest loan for a deposit or something would be a nice idea, we’re not after money for nothing, it’s just that I’m not keen on paying 6.9% on a 80-90% mortgage, we just couldn’t afford that. Anyway, don’t want to get into that here and now. We’re saving hard, have bought and sold a few things and have got a decent amount saved, just not quite £40k yet.

Read them all carefully and think about what you actually think is right, not what is best for you at the moment. Although it does seem to have a very 'Green' bias.

If you must know, I live 4 miles from work and cycle most days, hence why I can afford the S4. Yes, it would be sold to buy a house when I have enough saved up. Thanks for the advice....very helpful....

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. what is a reduced interest loan if not money for nothing? im 35, my first mortgage was 8.5% (at over 6 times salary!), i'll wager older people here paid 15%+, the ultra cheap mortgages of the last 10 years were an anomaly, don't expect a repeat of them any time soon.ps good luck buying your first place, its a massively stressful nightmare, but one day you'll look back on it an wonder what the fuss was about

Forget I said anything, I just wanted some advice on where to find good information on the political parties. Sorry to have upset anyone.
Ignore the TV news, the papers and the radio.Go to each of the parties websites, download their manifestos, read them and decide.
Nothing more to it than that really.

its still a valid point. you are the one moaning about getting no help yet still living a good lifestyle by the looks of it. You still bought the car and would have a deposit qicker without itIf you must know, I live 4 miles from work and cycle most days, hence why I can afford the S4. I had no help from parents or anybody else either for that matter.
I get the impression that a lot of younger not just you(not a lot younger by the way)people have this opinion it was easier for the rest of us.
It was not. I had to make sacrifices as did most people it appears by your post that you are not willing to do so.
Now don't get me wrong I don't care that you bought the car in fact I applaud it well done.
I only post because of the talk of help whist having it. You want the cake and to eat it and not put any weight on whist doing it.
As for voting I don't know of any party that has specified help for new buyers.
Labour as you know has voided stamp duty for first time buyers so it would seem thats where your vote should go if that is your highest priority.

I had a look at that earlier, and I think it's complete nonsense. It's far too simplistic, and I can only hope that people don't really vote for a party because some Micky Mouse web site tells them to.Pesty said:

I'm guess I'm annoyed about the pricing of houses around this area and the fact that everytime I go to see a mortgage broker they're quoting over £1,000 of interest on the mortgage alone. I just don't know how I can afford that plus the mortgage repayments, council tax, bills etc.
Yes, of course I would sell the car when I feel I have enough deposit to buy our house, but I appreciate the fact that it is expensive to run and that I could have more spare money if I didn't have it. I am actually looking to sell it at the moment in any case as it's proving expensive to run.
