DIY Geometry Measurement
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I'm wondering if anybody knows of any online guides/methods that detail how to carry out basic geometry measurements?
I know my car is setup incorrectly, I know what it's suppose to be, and I know how to adjust it. I just would like to be able to measure it myself so I can adjust it to suit. The usual google search just brings up tonnes of companies who want to charge me £30 etc. for laser measurement, which is something I'd rather avoid doing everytime I turned a bolt.
So how did people do it before all the laser trickery stuff?
I'll be buying a tyre temperature guage / probes at somepoint, what else might I need to tune it for track setup?
Thanks,
Chris

Bits of string (or builders lasers) can be used to set the toe, if you're methodical, but you's also need a camber/caster gauge and a corner weight gauge or a set of corner weight pads and a nice, flat base to do the work on, if you want to do a full set-up. You may also wish to check bumpsteer; you can make up your own gauge using a couple of dial gauges. It's also worth getiing your springs and dampers checked for consistency, but unless you're really serious there's no point in investing in the necessary equipment - your local track specialist should be able to check spring rates and dyno your dampers for very little cost, if you take them off the car for him.
