I'm showing my girlfriend around Scotland at the weekend, overnighting Friday in Lockerbie and Saturday at Fort William.

What's the most picturesque route up the country taking in Glencoe?

I was thinking up to Glasgow, then A82 and then coming home back to Glasgow and then down the coast via Ayr and Girvan.

Any thoughts?

Go up the A84 and back the A82.

Well, the A82 is the road through Glencoe. The 84 becomes the 85 then the 82 (at Crianlarich).

So once at Glencoe, you'll either have to turn around and retrace half of it, before following the 82 down to Loch Lomond and Glasgow, or head north a bit more to Fort William, then cross country through Spean Bridge, Dalwhinnie etc and finish up coming down the A9 back to Edinburgh.

Depends which areas you're starting/finishing in, really.

Alternatively head south from Fort William via
A82 to Balachulisch
B828 to Oban
B816 to Lochgilphead
A83 to Inveraray, Rest and be Thankful, and Tarbert. All tremendous roads then pick up the
A82 to Erskine Bridge just west of Glasgow

I would recommend:

Glasgow and head through Dumbarton
Turn right at the Balloch/Stoneymullan RAB and head for Drymen.
Carry on directly towards Aberfoyle and just after the Rob Roy Tourist Trap/hotel take the 2nd exit and
then across to Callander and turn left up to Crianlarich and up onwards for some distance towards Ballachulish/Glencoe Village*

  • as you pass through Glencoe village admire the new Fezza 430 (F40?) that the Chisholms breakdown/recovery service owner has bought himself.
Forget about heading up to Fort Bill as:

1> It's a pretty pants wee town (cancel your booking and book at the Falls Of Lora, just after Connell Bridge, instead)
2> It's a horrible drive up the road anyway with about 2 or 3 passing places at most and you'll more than likely end up behind a Dormobile doing 40mph at best and breaking through every fking corner.

Instead take the 2nd exit at the RAB and head for Port Appin, and on towards Benderloch (Evo used this road as part of the route in their greatest drives in the world).

Cross the Connell Bridge and turn right and head down towards Cruachan (well worth a visit) and Loch Awe.
Turn right after Loch Awe over the hill towards Inveraray.
Turn Left at Inveraray and make your way back down to Glasgow whilst stopping off at the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar.

A word of warning: You may have Scameras logged on your satnav but they're replacing/widening a bridge between Bridge Of Orchy and the Kingshouse hotel and a scamera van was parked up there the other day and I've NEVER seen one there before. So be aware really.

On the way back then through Ayr and Girvan is now horrible as a result of the Specs camera all the way. Instead head across through Dalmellington and down through the Galloway Forest and head up the Dalveen Pass and back on to the M74 around Leadhills.

Good point.

We saw one last weekend at the same place (flat bit across Rannoch Moor). Thankfully, I was driving a minibus that can barely hit 50, so we were fine.

This would be my suggestion also yes The scenerey north of Dumbarton really is rather beautiful. Apart from which, the A9 up to and beyond Perth should be avoided at all costs.

Have a great trip Mark. Thanks again for your hospitality last weekend.

Superb route, thanks chaps, some cracking scenery. If ever I can repay the favour with North Yorkshire advice just let me know.
