Hey guys, i can see me being a regular contributer here now i have an alfa and little technical knowledge hehe .

I've decided to change the cambelt and variator on my 156 (2.0TS) as a precautionary measure, and becasue it sounds that the variator might be worn. Anyway a local(ish) and well reccomended alfa specialist has quoted me just under £300 for the cambelt + tensioners and £120 for the variator, + VAT on all of this so would come to a bill of just under £500. Does this seem reasonable? or should i be looking for another quote?

Sounds about right I think. You can check Jamie's prices here for a comparison:

thanks for the link, he is a bit cheaper £60 or so, but his is for a "service inc. cambelt" i'm not sure if the quote i had would include any other service work, i will call up and check.

Worth chucking a new water pump on as well I'd have thought.

That's a fair price, although I would have expected the variator to be nearer £100 inc vat

Check the kit includes Cam belt, cam belt tensioner, idler, balancer shaft belt, balancer shaft tensioner? All this needs to be changed at each interval.
