R33 GTST or EVO IV
Discussion
Long time lurker here.... I need some advice.
I'm 25 on Sunday and I can finally own an import without being crippled on insurance.
I'm looking at either a R33 GTST or an EVO IV.
Spending 3 - 5k.
I've looked at the specs for both, I'd prefer to have the skyline but just wanted to get some opinions on here from owners first.
Currently driving a Civic VTI and had a 200SX S13 for 6 months recently.
Thanks for any help.

I'm not fussed about # of doors.
mpg is a minor concern as I usually walk to work.
It's more of a weekend toy than a daily driver.
I just want to hear what people think of them and what the owners feel towards them.
At the moment it seems like 4k Gets you a lot of car for the money.
Thanks.

Agreed, don't bother with the GTST. If you can afford the Evo then go for that as the GTST isn't a "proper" skyline.
That is a retarded comment. If you watch some of the old footage from Japanese tuner battles the GTST was on some circuits faster. You won't see many GTR's being used for drifting either.
Having said that unless the GTST has some mods then I would got for the EVO stock for stock. The GTST really needs coilovers and thicker sway bars...in fact they transform the car.
Evo has lower running costs and is a better B road car. Skylines are massive, and whilst very capable cars, not that suited to fun quiet B roads.
Both will cripple you though with running costs - especially as a daily driver. You may also get the upgrade bug which can be ruinous
Things to factor in = age of car may require:
New belts
New bushes
New discs / pads
New tyres
Full service - which on complicated 4wd systems is not cheap. Are you willing to trust that it was done in Japan given the costs associated with a belt snapping?
Other considerations are that imports may have been ruined by the fitment of stupid jap spec lowering / stiffening kits, which IMO are totally unsuitable for the UK. So you may have to factor in a SH set of dampers / and or springs. Yes they look good, but they don't work over here - avoid Tein suspension for this reason!

ive got an R33 gtst, absolutely standard car. i've used it everyday for 2 years for short commute. Absolutely reliable and as standard is so easy to drift/powerslide. I think the stock suspension is quite firm, but ofcourse things can be uprated if u wanted.
Styling wise i think its nicer than the mitsubishi
Btw who quoted you for insurance, i need to find a new company??

I got the quote from sky who use a few specialist insurers. Usually specialising in modified and imports . . Give them a call, they are always helpful . . Thanks to everyone for the info so far, I think it has to be the R33 . . . Can't quite push the boat for a GTR though, so i'll aim for a GTS-T for now.

If i was you id save a few more £ and get an EVO 5 the best of the earlier models, dont buy an EVO 4 mate very prone to crankwalk, see MLR for details, loads and loads!, cant comment on the skyline as ive never owened one!
As said crankwalk CAN be an issue but IS NOT COMMON, only on thrashed IVs and poorly serviced ones. If you do check out the threads on the MLR you'll find most of us owners haven't had an issue ( 3 years with the IV and no problems so far ). As with all forums you will always find horror stories as people tend to post when they have a problem and not when everything is fine. Finally, the V the best early Evo!? What about a TME, if you're considering saving a bit more cash then thats the one to go for.

What do you mean by best? Track performance, B-road ability, disireability (TME), straight line speed? What about the 6rsII, that would be my choice, i beleive you know about that one

Anyway, my initial issue was the "very prone to crankwalk" comment on IVs, and as said, I disagree. That is all. Have a nice dsy.
